South Carolina police now investigating allegations that Alex Murdaugh took money from law firm

State police confirmed Monday that they have opened an investigation into missing money that a law firm said was taken by an attorney from a prominent South Carolina legal family whose wife and son were killed at their home three months ago.

Monday’s announcement means that, along with the investigation into the deaths, the State Law Enforcement Division has four other ongoing investigations into Alex Murdaugh and his family. Meanwhile, his law license has been suspended indefinitely by the South Carolina Supreme Court.

“I continue to urge the public to be patient and let this investigation take its course. Investigative decisions we make throughout this case and any potentially related case must ultimately withstand the scrutiny of the criminal justice process,” State Law Enforcement Division Chief Mark Keel said in a two paragraph announcement.

Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick PA (PMPED) law firm announced earlier this month that Murdaugh had misappropriated money from the business and was no longer associated with the firm. Exactly how much money might be missing has not been made public.

He put a hit out on himself so his son would inherit a 10 million dollar insurance settlement. But, the hit man couldn't shoot straight.

Death on Demand, set on the island of Broward’s Rock, South Carolina, may note that one of the main antagonists throughout the stories is the circuit solicitor. Now I have to wonder if someone in the Murdaugh family was the inspiration for that character.

Alex Murdaugh Told His Former Client to Kill Him Before Shooting, Police Say

A 61-year-old man was arrested after Mr. Murdaugh survived being shot in the head on a rural South Carolina road. Mr. Murdaugh’s wife and son had been fatally shot in June.

Alex Murdaugh, the prominent South Carolina lawyer whose wife and son were shot and killed in June, asked a former client to kill him this month so his other son could collect a $10 million insurance payment but survived being shot in the head, the police said on Tuesday night.

It was the latest startling twist in a series of mysteries that have brought intense scrutiny to the Murdaugh family and the rural slice of South Carolina where their family has held sway for more than a century, though the central question of who killed Mr. Murdaugh’s wife and son remains unsolved.

The former client, Curtis Edward Smith, 61, of Walterboro, S.C., was arrested and charged with assisted suicide, aggravated assault and battery, and insurance fraud in connection with the shooting on Sept. 4, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said.
