(24,906 posts)as soon as recieved, but they can't reveal the results until the polls close. We will have a huge portion of the count coming in starting in about five minutes.

(2,243 posts)The text message that I got said that my ballot had been received and "counted," but as far as I know, CA doesn't count the ballots early. They check the signatures on the outside and then open the envelope and collect the ballots, but they don't officially count.
The LA Times said the same thing back in 2020 https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-11-02/2020-election-california-ballot-count "Prior to the close of the polls at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, ballots can be readied for counting by checking signatures on envelopes, removing ballots from the envelopes and then scanning them to ensure no stray marks were made. But the actual vote tally must wait until election night."
And I asked the person when I dropped off my ballot in Alameda County, and she said the same -- they weren't going to start counting until Election Day, they would just open the envelopes and get them in order to run through the scanner.
But I'm sure I saw at least one county person saying on the news over the weekend that they had started counting early.
It's confusing! I think that to some reporters, "counting" refers to noting how many ballots have been returned by Democrats and how many by Republicans and independents. And the Times' use of "tally" is also confusing.

(24,906 posts)The amount of counted votes being reported already would indicate that significant counting has already occured. Also, if the ballots are already qualified and at the counting center, those machines count awfully fast.

I've seen enough: the vote to recall CA Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) fails.
