Lassen County, CA
Has anyone EVER heard of them?? A little bit of Alabama in Northern California?
Seriously though... what makes it so GOP? As far as I can tell, it's not full of Golf Clubs and such things... and doesn't seem like a "Sundown Town" either... why so RED? Idaho for people who want to live in Sandpoint but need California State benefits?

(11,430 posts)and Mt. Shasta is in Siskiyou County. I've been to Susanville, the largest town in Lassen Co., and while it was a nice enough place it's not a particularly "happening" spot.
Modoc County, to the north, has nicer scenery, IMHO. Both counties combined have a lower population than rides CalTrain between San Jose and San Francisco on a given day.

(11,780 posts)The rethugs know how to push a couple emotional issues to sway folks that really ought to be democrats if theyd pay attention to real policies.

(3,546 posts)Thats the part of the state that was pushing for the six state initiative awhile back. Lassen was Trumps best county in the last election.

Is it sarcasm if I mention their failure to act?

(6,991 posts)and mostly all of those idiots there blamed Newsom and Pres. Biden for the fires, and many of them he told her still LOVE tRump, and want Pres. Biden/Harris/Hillary and Pres. Obama arrested
By the way, my friends brother is married to a black woman, so uh the looks they get.
It is 2021, but as someone said that part of California is like parts of Alabama.

The major employers in the county are three prisons. In 2007, half the adults in the county worked at one of the prisons.

(2,305 posts)Modoc County is in the top right corner and Lassen County is just below it. Lassen had the highest % for Trump of any California county in the 2020 election (74.47% for Trump). The deepest red part of California.

(15,458 posts)There have always also been a lot of conservatives and anti-social types up in that area for the longest time. They like to play "independent sons of the soil/mountain man" up there.
My father taught up in Anderson for a year.in the sixties; couldn't handle the bone-headedness and went to another school district along the coast before Reagan cut education funding.

Folks east of the plains can't really picture how far Susanville is from anywhere - 3 1/2 hours to Sacremento. Even further from the N part of the county. The isolation and barely-above-poverty incomes create resentments that aren't based in reality

(7,053 posts)its southernmost border is 1040 miles. (Similar to distance from Milwaukee to New Orleans.) 12-15 hours of driving, not all interstate. Its a huge state.
