TOKYO -- China is honing its technical skills in sixth-generation communication networks, which are expected to be rolled out commercially as soon as 2030.
China's 6G development had been expected to slow due to sanctions against Huawei Technologies imposed by the U.S. government under former President Donald Trump in 2019, but China has maintained its competitiveness by mobilizing state-run companies and universities.
Nikkei worked with Tokyo-based research company Cyber Creative Institute to survey around 20,000 patent applications for nine core 6G technologies, including communications, quantum technology, base stations and artificial intelligence.
China topped the list with 40.3% of 6G patent filings, followed by the U.S. with 35.2%. Japan ranked third with 9.9%, followed by Europe with 8.9% and South Korea with 4.2%. Countries with more patent filings tend to lead in terms of advanced technology and have a bigger say on industry standards.
The upcoming generation of mobile communications technology, which is said to be more than 10 times faster than 5G, is expected to enable fully autonomous driving, high-definition virtual reality and worldwide internet connections, even in remote deserts.
China's patent applications are mostly related to mobile infrastructure technology. In the 6G era, aerial coverage, such as satellites, as well as ground base stations for broader radio bands, will be needed. Many of the latest patents have been filed by Huawei, which controlled 30% of the world's base stations in 2020. Other big Chinese patent holders include state-run companies such as State Grid Corporation of China and China Aerospace Science and Technology.

(2,868 posts)we could have had Huawei 5G technology, which would have already been nationwide by now, much faster than U.S. based 5G technology, and SIXTY PERCENT cheaper.
The toll of his negative impacts is never-ending.

(3,365 posts)China cannot have ears on the internet and making all of the equipment would give them the back door to the global network. The US has always had this and wants to keep it to ourselves. Thus the fight over 5G equipment.
My personal experience with Huawei is they are different in a bad way. Was building for Cisco in China for big AT&T/Verizon/etc. central exchange switches. We had a error that shut down production. In flies in the help. We have a team of 50 trying to fix it. In another building (same company) we were build the similar Huawei product. The plant is huge- 100,000 employees and 300 acres. I see an old friend and stop to say hi. Hes working on Hauwei and they are shut down. Asked what was going on and he described the error. It was the same thing we were seeing. A software patch came out fixed the bug and we were back up. 2 weeks later Hauwei fixed their bug the same way. They copied exact Ciscos design. Bug per bug compatible. China believes in copy rights! Everyone has a right to make a copy. This was 10 years ago. Hauwei has grown huge during that time due the China initiative to become communication infrastructure builders for the same national security reasons we did. At this point, I think the best to level the playing field let everyone listen to everyone else so it is crystal clear what everyone and state is doing. This will be the arms race for the future of cyber warfare.

(2,868 posts)The U.S. companies were way behind Huawei, and still are, which is what was behind the effort. Numerous experts have stated that even if the false charges were true, they could quite simply be circumvented.
It will cost the American consumers TENS OF BILLIONS, will leave us with inferior technology and equipment, and Lord knows WHEN it will be nationwide, which would have already happened if we dumped the badly behind-the-curve U.S. companies.

(3,365 posts)I would pay TENS OF BILLIONS of dollars for that right. We have it right now and do not want to lose it.
The US should nationalize communication equipment this because it runs everything. The power grid, the transaction at the gas pump, the ability for you to see this text is all done by this equipment. It is our soft under belly. Giving China the key only makes it worse.
Huawei is China and every other western communication company shares with the 5 eyes. The first eyes are the USAs.
What exact issue with 4G LTE that you think is going to get us dumped badly and inflict this massive damage?
The speed to download a movie?
If you are currently using a V.32bis modem, yes a huge upgrade but it isn't 1990 anymore.

(567 posts)Not a fan of Ren Zhengfei at all!! Good for Japan and US to continue its 6G development with use of our satellites.
