General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI need to give a huge shoutout to DU member DFW RE: My wife's Green Card Application
As some of you know, the NVC rejected my marriage certificate from China, all but ending my wife's chance a green card.
DFW sent me a private message and put me in contact with the proper people. Now, I have a powerful Washington elected official personally overseeing the case and making sure everything is done to fast track my wife here.
He was extremely upset and offended at what SEATAC did to my wife on February 27th and, after researching the details, is upset our documents were denied.
DFW made this happen because he put the wheels in motions and words cannot express how grateful and indebted I am to him. And, if all this happens, how indebted to the elected official I am, even though I will be told it is just his job.
My political campaign is still suspended until she gets here, but she has ordered me to see it through to end when she arrives. So, the second my wife is through immigration at LAX, my candidacy for Arizona State Representative for LD4 is back on with renewed vigor.
When that happens, I ask DU to help support this social studies teacher to flip a D+13 district back to the Democrats, as the odious Republican freshman won by only 2400 votes. Let's turn Arizona Blue!
Again, thank you so much, DFW.

It touched a nerve. Reminded me of my first immigration fight for a couple in the early 1970s - took years to win.
Thank you, DFW!

(15,626 posts)But my sister married a Canadian and they had problems when they decided to move to the US. My parents rallied their many friends and they all called their Representative in Congress (my sister was living with them so he was her Representative too), and in no time my BIL had his green card in hand. He said there was a notation on his file that said something like, "Congressional interest in this case".
That notation may still have still been there years later. My husband and my BIL applied for US citizenship at the same time, and my BIL got approved much faster than my husband did.

(6,780 posts)What's interesting about my district is the Pima County part of LD4 is practically ignored. No candidate as ever gone to the Tohono o'Odham Nation, Three Points, or Ajo to do anything.
When people in Three Points heard they had a Republican representing them in Phoenix, they all went nuts. Pima County for LD4 is 8-1 Democratic and it's my base of operations. If I can do what the losing Democrat did and sweep Pima County, I'm in Phoenix.

I actually feel like family here now. And as I said (shameless plug), when I un-suspend, let's put a true DUer in Arizona government and turn the governorship and at least one AZ Lege Chamber blue. We only need one seat in the AZ House to do it -- MY seat!

(6,780 posts)Trust me, most don't know a 1/4 of it. Our immigration system is designed to be as cumbersome, expensive, time consuming, confusing, and dehumanizing as possible so people don't come.
Like standardized testing, it is designed for the applicant/test taker to fail, not pass/succeed.

(6,780 posts)IR1 means marriage is at least two years old. Ours is seven.
CR1 should get more scrutiny, but should also be almost as automatic.
I shouldn't have to get someone wealthy or powerful for the CBP and the NVC to do the right thing and let my spouse in. The American government should not be in the business of separating Americans from their families.
I hope I can make it to Washington to be a Rep or Senator one day, but for now, let's just work on the AZ House. Unfortunately, the Constitution denies the states to deal with immigration under the denied powers clause of Article One. But I can advocate as a member of the Arizona House

Jakes Progress
(11,213 posts)of the elected official who is working on this. The original post dissed both Kelly and Sinema. If either of them is now helping, it would be good for us to know that.
AZLD4Candidate
(6,780 posts)At first, Kelly's office ignored me, telling me "the law is the law." Raul's office hung up on me after my wife was refused entry, saying "there's nothing we can do" and "we consider this matter closed. And Sinema's office offered up lots of empty platitudes and the appearance of doing something.
I didn't "diss" them. I reported how I was treated as an American and a constituent. Now, Kelly's office is doing something and helping me, thanks to DFW, and I am somewhat relieved 15 months of separation may be coming to an end.
As a DUer already say, someone powerful should not have to get involved to make sure the US Government does the right thing.
I find this reply a little condescending, similar to the reply on Monday when someone told me I was "abandoning my district" by suspending my campaign and that my "constituents deserved better," not understanding that family ALWAYS comes first.
Celerity
(54,409 posts)Jakes Progress
(11,213 posts)I supported your first post and completely understand your frustration and anger. The point of my post was to let you give credit to a congressman your original post said what you just said here. Your first post indicated that Kelly ignored you and dismissed you.
It is obvious that his handlers and aides were to blame. I thought I would give you the chance to correct the impression that Kelly himself refused to get involved. In this thread you kept saying that you didn't want to name the person who was helping you. I figured that DWF got you in touch with Kelly and he did the right thing. He should get credit for that.
I don't care whether you run or not. But you need to not take as an attack every nuance of everything posted if you mean to stand up to the rigors of a campaign. I was trying to help you. You quickly reacted as if it was an attack. You still want o lump me in with other posters posters that didn't praise you enough. As I said, I supported your first post and was relieved to hear that the travesty was being addressed. I can understand your touchiness after this mess, but you need to reflect before you reply.

(8,999 posts)I vote in AZLD2 but I have been following your story since your first post. I too am married to a foreign national (British) and have gone through the process of immigration and getting a green card for him. He became a citizen in '12. I couldn't even sponsor him because he was the breadwinner in the family, not me (that's because of ageism). Anyway, when you posted recently that you had suspended your campaign and was leaving the country, I totally understood your feelings about it all. I think I cried a little for you too because our immigration system needs a complete overhaul. Keeping families together is what it should be about. I'm so sorry you've gone though this emotional b.s. for so long and I hope your reunion is sweet!

A friend who was banned 30 years ago told me your wife's sounded as if it could be like hers. She said she'd been turned down permanently because she'd been convicted of black marketeering in her home country, where it was common and necessary for many to get along. No DFWs available for her, unfortunately; she returned without permission. But all's very well with her otherwise.
