For over a week. He had pneumonia, COPD, mrsa, and it turns out, a failed heart valve. They extubated this morning, and he passed about an hour and a half later.
He was 71. You know, it feels like someone kicked you in the stomach. My elderly mom is coping pretty well, but I think it's going to hit her hard a little later.

(113,963 posts)I hope you can be comforted knowing that it sounds as though he was given the level of care that he deserved and should have received-- and didn't fall victim to the rationing ongoing in some areas.
None of this makes the loss any easier but it is good that you can be there for your mother.
My sympathy to you and yours.

(10,104 posts)5 years ago my BIL passed of a massive heart attack at 56. DH had to tell their 85 year old dad. I think it took quite a while for Dad to grasp. Youre not supposed to outlive your child.
Hugs to you

(20,897 posts)When my late Mother passed away, she had been on a ventilator for 9 days at the ICU at Reno Renown Hospital. Her lungs were shot. She had Stage 4 Cancer in both lungs and in the T-8 of her back. MRSA was overtaking her as well. She lasted 75 minutes from the moment of being taken off, each last breath a rattle. She was ready to go.
That was Jan.2, 2013. She was my rock. I still miss her so much.
May you find comfort. A mother, no matter her age, never gets over losing a child. Hugs.

(29,406 posts)Your sibs are the ones who are supposed to be there with you after your parents are gone.
You are likely right about your mom. I hope you have someone to lean on, as it is so hard to be supportive to someone else when you are barely able to function yourself. I felt like I had to be strong for my parents, which was very difficult, as it felt like I had no one supporting me.
Ill be thinking of you.

My son died in 2014. It was quite raw at first. That passed too.
