(20,595 posts)Ive been to Ireland many times. Its a better place to live than the US. Russians seem to like it here, which is probably a sign our culture is beyond help.

(1,406 posts)To get a reasonable priced home you would have to be in the hinterlands of Worchester.
Even in a 50 mile radius of Boston it is 450-500k for 1500 SqFt.

(20,595 posts)Im talking about the rest of the US where 1500 sq foot homes arent $500k.

(34,189 posts)One was a Swede, who paid a woman to marry him, beat her, assaulted me when he was served with eviction papers, and ended up deported when his "wife" finally reported him. The good part was that he was sent back to Sweden just as the first Gulf War was winding up and was drafted to serve in the UN forces in the Middle East.
The other was Canadian who wrote me a bad check. It turned out he'd already been convicted locally for over $150,000 worth of bad checks. He also got contracts with the local police department and the Capitol Complex to do air conditioning work - even though he could not legally work in the US, did not have any licenses to do that type of work with the state, the county or the city.
I got my money, but was paid with a certified check made out by someone else as a deposit for more A/C work - which it turned out never got done. He got sent out of state in Florida's effort to reduce the prison population - he kindly let them know he had warrants out in Pennsylvania so they would send him there. The State Attorney's Office told me that I was the only person that got money out of the man. The only reason I got paid was that I had liens on his daughters' horses and would not let anyone in the family on my property.

(10,969 posts)It's one thing to defend a border - a physical place. Which is what you're seeing the Haitian refugees.
Much harder to figure out where that guy on "vacation" just vanished off to. Or a student. Or someone on a work visa.
Almost all of the undocumented Europeans I've met came in that way. Thinking on it, I'm not sure I've ever met one who came in over a border. I'm sure some do.

(4,170 posts)I know of a friend of mine, a gay Canadian woman married to a gay American man, who got deported some years ago. Same with two Irish friends. Similar circumstances.

(11,419 posts)I know one Brit who was deported and barred from further entry for abusing the visa waiver program (citizens of certain countries can enter the US for up to 90 days IIRC on just their passport. This person would stay 80-85 days, then go to Canada or some other country and re-enter, thus restarting the clock. And it worked for many years). There was a case I read about in San Francisco some years back where a French citizen who overstayed his visa and setting up his own small catering company was deported. The big difference is that ICE isn't actively seeking them out, like they are with immigrants from Mexico and Central America. And since the US population is still predominantly of European descent it's easier for them to blend in in a middle class environment.
