“Pelosi’s move is a direct challenge to progressives, who have warned that they will block the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill if reconciliation isn’t complete.”

“This is a clear sign that Pelosi and her leadership team plan to muscle the infrastructure bill through the House Thursday regardless of where negotiations with the Senate on the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package stand.”

1. It's a shame they couldn't get this done,

but right now there's virtually no chance of getting that reconciliation bill passed. I hope the progressives will see this and not stand in the way of the infrastructure bill getting passed.

We can pass both with Dem votes alone, so if moderates want to pass the infrastructure bill, then they better get to work negotiating on whatever reconciliation bill everyone can stomach.

You clearly don't want the reconciliation bill, so like some of these moderate Dems, you'd be fine if it doesn't pass so long as the bipartisan bill passes, but just like I tell progressives all of the time, moderates and progressives neither make up a majority of the party, we need both, and telling one side to suck it up is not a formula for turnout.

You don't even know me. I want the bill to pass, but I don't think it's likely at all to pass right now. Between Manchin and Sinema and the Senate and moderates in the House, the likelihood of getting it passed is pretty damned low, and it would be an awful defeat to see both bills get shot down. It's imperative for us to get something passed or the Democrats will be seen as an utter failure at governing and we'll have used up Biden's political capital and not have shit to show for it.

17. I'm more or less accepting what Pelosi is saying.

She knows the reality of the situation more than any of us on DU, and she wants to go ahead and take a vote on the infrastructure bill. I saw an article this morning that proposed financing the larger bill for 4 years rather than 10, which would dramatically bring the price down. It would also let the 2024 election be a referendum on the new policies, which are broadly popular. If they bring down the price, moderates and progressives can claim victory. Both bills are important, but it would be a disaster to see them both go down. The Democrats would be seen as weak and ineffective. I know that's a political concern, but Biden needs to be seen as the President who can get things done.

It is ok if the infrastructure comes first, but we can not abandon the 3.5 trillion bill.

Nobody said she can only count Dem votes. Nobody counts votes like Ms Pelosi and this is a bi-partisan bill that a lot of repubs need in their home districts. And frankly, I'm not necessarily impressed with McCarthy's legislative skills.

Republicans in the House were whipping against the bill and only about 5 Republicans have said they'd vote for it.
