Manchin engaged with the flotilla of progressive activists that has been staging sail-in protests outside his houseboat every afternoon this week:

I’ve been critical of Manchin but it’s good that he at least spoke to some people on our side for a change.

3. Why shouldn't any elected official talk to his constituents?

The American people need to stop acting like we are going cup in hand to a senator or congressional member.

I heard this bit of news on TRMS and she said that she gave him credit for talking to the people in kayaks. He wasn't doing them a favor. He was doing his job. Stop acting like elcted officials are royalty. They were picked to work for Americans. If they don't do the job, elect someone who will.

4. You raise good points but DC pols almost never talk to ordinary citizens.

Sure, they will talk to donors all day. every day but they rarely make time for us common folk, especially Republicans. Yes, the ordinary people of America deserve more time with their representatives in DC and they do not merit any special treatment. It's just exceptionally rare when something like this happens.
