The land in the City of Manhattan Beach, which was wrongfully taken from Willa and Charles Bruce, should be returned to their living descendants, the legislation declares, according to the Los Angeles Times and it is in the public interest of the State of California, the County of Los Angeles, the City of Manhattan Beach, and the People of the State of California to do so.
Activists and lawmakers in California hope that this return of land will help advance efforts on reparations for Black folks and other peoples who werent allowed to build generational wealth.
This bill sets the tone for the future of reparations in California, said State Sen. Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), who authored the bill and is a member of Californias recently formed reparations task force. If you can inherit generational wealth, you can inherit generational debt. The city of Manhattan Beach owes a debt to the Bruce family. The state of California owes a debt to the Bruce family, and the county of Los Angeles owes a debt to the Bruce family and our governor today is here to fix his signature to this bill to pay that debt to the Bruce family.
Much more at the link. Thank you Govoner Newsome and to it's author, State Senator Steven Bradford.
I really believe this can be catalytic, Newsom said. What were doing here today can be done and replicated anywhere else. Theres an old adage: Once a mind is stretched, it never goes back to its original form.

(149,516 posts)Justice has finally begun for the Bruce family! I could not be happier to see it.
They were denied the opportunity to reap riches that they could have passed down to their descendants. And that action deprived them of the ability to accumulate generational wealth.
It's never too late to make amends for such actions. Even 100 years is not too long for justice to be done.

Theyd get four Senators. I am on board with that.

(7,263 posts)In the 1880's, the Republican Party pushed new regulations through the Congress (they controlled it like the Dems did in the mid 20th Century) to allow them to break the territory up into ND, SD, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana.
They got 6 reps and 10 Senators out of it...those areas should have been ONE State with 3, 4, or maybe 5 reps and 2 Senators.
Talk about Gerrymandering, it is a long tradition with Rethugs.
And BTW, the US government of the time, run by Rethuglicans, stole a lot of the land by breaking established treaties with the true owners, The Nations of the Native Americans, right and left. Custer got his due.

(12,208 posts)Wow. The Democratic partys platform in 1892 sounds very GOP and the Republican Party sounds like our party today. From what I read, the parties didnt switch until the turn of the century.
Id heard the parties used to be different, but this was a shocker.

(7,263 posts)And let's not talk about why Puerto Rico, the Philippines and The Caribbean US territories were not made states within 10 years of the US acquiring them from the Spaniards...well, let's.
It had nothing to do with their size, and everything to do with who lived there...POC.
