When we have sections of college football students chanting "F**K BIDEN" (er, aren't these supposed to be the 'educated' ones?) - how can we expect them to be upset with Granny's behavior?

We have NOT had an 'awakening' with the 'defeat' of IQ45. We DID get the numbers necessary to assure his departure from OUR White House, but it just ain't over! Truth be told, what with the works of state legislatures concerning voting laws, as well as the actions of the 'Supreme Court,' our task may indeed be more difficult in days to come.

I can understand hatred for an individual who would have harmed or killed someone I love, or for people like Hitler, Trump, orMcConnell.

I cannot understand blanket hatred for a whole group of people, most of whom you have probably never met or interacted with.

I am thinking of the song from South Pacific.

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

Richard Rogers wrote this song.

A 17 year old in 1957 was born in 1940, making them 81 now. Quite a few 81 year olds still alive. And their sons and daughters are middle aged.

Not so long ago. And what about the people who turned fire hoses and dogs on Black protesters in the mid-60s? They're mostly still around, voting Republican.

Kids can learn Native American history from the 60s cowboy movies. They are a great source of completely useless information.
A short history lesson:
We hung 38 Sioux Warriors after the Dakota war. Even though hanging was common this hanging / murder was botched. The ropes were to short so the Sioux Warriors necks did not break! They were not hung they were strangled. They did all 38 at one time! It took a few minutes but we got the job done. Wonder how such a mistake could happen???? The men were put in a common shallow grave by the next morning physicians had dug up the Sioux Warriors for use as medical cadavers! I would guess most were used for office and parlor displays. William Mayo, founder of the Mayo Clinic collected and displayed a Sioux Warrior named Marpiya Okinajin / Cut Nose. 156 years later the Mayo Clinic apologized and set up a scholarship that will allow one Native American to go to medical school each year. The clinic communicated with the sovereign Sioux nation to set up the scholarship, however the Native Americans indicated there was some unfinished business and that an apology was in order.
This is just one short history lesson teaching, some untaught history of our treatment of native Americans. For the record the Sioux people started the Dakota war. They started it after we did not pay an annuity payment and they were unable to buy food. At the time we were involved in a horrific war of treason and did not have the money to pay the annuity. 1862 was the year. Wonder why they didn't just pull up their boot straps and go harvest some buffalo??? I guess they were just a bunch of liberal takers.(sarcasm)
So has anything changed regarding our treatment of the sovereign Native American Nations. Can you say Keystone XL! Way to go JOE. Apparently Joe studied history.

upper west Tennessee, and I have known about it for a long time - long enough that I can't remember where I learned it. It could have even been in a novel or one of those big books from American Heritage.

However I first heard about it, I am 100% certain my mom and I had more than one deep conversation about it; she never missed an opportunity to explain racism, anti-Semitism, Xenophobia, and any other types of prejudice. Her big thing was the Holocaust, probably because she lived through WW II and its aftermath. I don't think she compared things like Trail of Tears to the Holocaust consciously but I think she would now.

She was open minded and a voracious reader.

Unfortunately, her parents and other members of her family were sent to Auschwitz. I absorbed a deep-seated loathing of bigotry of any sort at her breast. When my family emigrated to the US, she took up opposition to racism as a personal cause. She marched with Martin Luther King more than once, wearing a yellow star of David with "Jew" on it, in memory of the one she had to wear in Austria. She was once asked why she did this, and she quoted Martin Luther, „Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders. Gott helfe mir.“

That photo has shown up in articles, books and TV programs about the Civil Rights Movement so many times that it is almost as well known as the photo of the Sailor kissing the woman in the white dress on V-E day.

And yes, the sheer hatred on that woman/girl's face is appalling and a bit frightening, and it is being recycled continually today.

If you have not done so, watch "Them". on Prime. The women remind me of the photo from Little Rock

Interestingly, one of them told me that the Mexican kids were always in school with whites for as long as she could remember (she is 72). Not exactly treated the same as Anglos but a great deal better than Black students.
