The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, has set a new deadline for the House to pass a major infrastructure spending bill after a week of negotiations left Joe Bidens social and environmental policy overhaul plan in a limbo.
In a letter to House Democrats on Saturday, Pelosi said that the House will have until Sunday 31 October to pass the $1tn bipartisan infrastructure bill, which passed the Senate in August.
Progressive Democrats in the House refused to vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill, despite pressure from their moderate counterparts, as leverage in negotiations over a separate bill that contains massive spending on many of Bidens campaign promises, including increased access to childcare and action on climate change.
More time was needed to reach our goal of passing both bills, which we will, Pelosi said in the letter.

So what happens with the debt limit between 10/18 and 10/31?

(4,167 posts)All it does is cause a media flurry and hyperbole headlines and talk on cable news ..and its really the Senate that needs to pass the reconciliation bill, not the House passing the infrastructure bill

(15,568 posts)It could be folded in to the reconciliation bill and passed by October 18- the October 31 deadline is for the bipartisan bill, not reconciliation.

(7,611 posts)deadline for passage of the infrastructure bill. A legislative victory for President Biden is being held hostage by a minority of House Democrats. The Reconciliation bill was always going to stand or fall on its own merits. Pass the bill!

(15,751 posts)Going against Pelosi's [imo] better judgement is not good for the longer term Dem health.
Two many minority interest Dem groups are using the narrow Dem vote margins to leverage their particular interests.

(13,180 posts)The body of the article quotes Biden saying, Everybodys frustrated. Its a part of being in government, being frustrated.
Notice that is not just "Biden frustration." The headline writer apparently decided to single Biden out as frustrated, losing the entire meaning and import of what he said and creating a false meaning and import in its place.

same intensity to get the bills passed.
This deadline will only give Manchin
the green light to keep delaying.
