Yep, first I was notified that I had been exposed to someone who was infected. So I received a test last Tuesday, and late last Friday night I was notified that I was indeed positive for COVID.
Despite being fully vaccinated, wearing masks, staying out of the air-space of others I still got infected
I've been much too angry to write anything about it until now. And I'm fairly certain I know who the unvaccinated idiot, who infected me, was.
All leading me to an anger I've rarely felt in my life. An anger I hope that I, and my babies and their babies, will never feel again.
I'm going for the antibody infusion tomorrow, so I'll likely be safe to be angry for many years yet to come.
Please stay extra safe everyone. Even if you have been as safe as I have been.

(38,581 posts)Keep in mind, though, it might also have been someone vaccinated who exposed you. Most of the recent exposures I've had have been by vaccinated people who believed themselves immune, so they were circulating when they had a "cold," "allergies," or a "headache."
This thing is such a mimic that it is hard to tell whether it's COVID, or the real deal cold, allergies, or headache.
I just engaged in verbal fisticuffs with one of my students who wanted to come to class with symptoms consistent with COVID. She was pretty pissed with me for elevating concerns about COVID over her emotional needs - and her need to attend class.
Good luck with the antibody infusion. Hope you get over it as quickly as my fellow (vaccinated) workers did.

(38,581 posts)Sometimes it helps to have assisted the scholl contact tracers early on, when they were being lied to by infected idiots. So sometimes I know things I'm not supposed to know.
Fortunatley, none of my exposures have matured into COVID. They've just been very inconvenient while I try to take steps to protect others - in case I have been infected.

After only one term on MIRT, I can spot her antivaxx posts a mile away. They have a unique flavor, use certain key verbiage, and evince a degree of hostility that's rarely seen on DU.
Most of us here at least try to obey the rules about civility the majority of the time, so when someone roars in spewing venom in their first post or two, it tends to stand out.

(19,287 posts)Admittedly they took a knowing risk -- after a year and a half of hypervigilance/masking/working from home/vaccination/etc -- and it bit them in the ass.
They had an adult child hit a big career milestone and so went to said cousin's favorite restaurant to celebrate. That was all it took. None of the other family/friends (only a handful were there) tested positive, so it was probably someone at the restaurant. The first time in 18 months they ate a meal in public and they both get breakthrough infections.
Fortunately they avoided hospitalization (as expected with vaccination) and recovered -- except one of them lost their sense of smell and it is not yet returned.
Be as careful as you can manage, everyone, because you're never not at some risk.

(43,099 posts)I think the antibody infusion will have you feeling better and soon, too.
I will light some white candles on your behalf tomorrow.
A night or two ago I was reading on the NY Times Covid update page and they recounted the degree to which the Pfizer vaccine loses its effectiveness. Also the Johnson one. I was pretty surprised to see some of the figures--I mean, down to something like 59% after four months? Not sure of my figures and I did try to check the tory but couldn't find it. The overall message I'm trying to get out is that the vaccines do leave their effectiveness, so:
a) continue being super careful
b) get a booster if you can.
JoeOtterbein
(7,869 posts)After the infusion today, I can't get the Pfizer for 90 days. I do feel a bit better!

(28,493 posts)I'm fully vaccinated, am annoyingly healthy at all times, and have the good fortune to live in Santa Fe, NM, where people are VERY good about masking. This past weekend I was in Denver for a science fiction thing called MileHiCon. Everyone was diligently masked, other than in the restaurant/bar. Science fiction people are good at science, which helps.
I'm 73 years old, and while I am, as I said above, incredibly healthy, I certainly hope I don't get a break-through infection, although if I have that misfortune, I will probably do just fine, given my basic level of good health.
I don't blame you for being so angry. It seems like an appropriate response to what's happened to you.

I finally went up to him, well not really, was about 20 ft away, and said you are making me super nervous that you are not wearing a mask. And he just said sorry, like oblivious.
When it was my turn, I told the nurse who gave me the injection. She was like ho hum. "We can suggest but we can't force anywhere to wear a mask" and I wanted to say geez even people getting vaccinations? But she seemed so disinterested I kept it to myself.

Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Maybe a month ago? No one here in TX, don't know about anywhere else, is following the guidelines by CDC. I wrote every single treatment down. Most all of them, I swear, are only recommended for those with super serious cases and who are hospitalized. It is a free-for-all here. It's like they're throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks.
That may be a good or bad. But it obviously shows that CDC is behind the ball.

(5 posts)Isn't the reason we all got vaxxed so that we could go back to normal? I've been without a mask since vaccinating for months, it's why I got it. I thought if you had the vaccine you were protected and the non-vaccinated were the ones in trouble.
Pardon my ignorance on the subject.
Crunchy Frog
(28,271 posts)developing herd immunity. This vax did a quite good job of protecting against infection with the previous variants, but seems to be less effective against the Delta variant. It still dramatically reduces the likelihood of severe infection, hospitalization, and death.
It isn't perfect, but at the moment, it's the best we've got.
Also, there's no reason for you to be ignorant. There's lots of good educational materials out there, just avoid FaceBook memes and fringe conspiracy nuts.

We're both doing well, and our teenager, who was vaccinated with Pfizer, has remained negative. So, yea, I didn't get vaccinated thinking it would keep me from getting COVID. I got vaccinated so it would keep me, and us, from dying from it. So far, so good.
