I wonder what the original justification (or goal) was for prohibiting backpacks?

As a "punishment" (!) to all the students. Ostensibly, it was to keep students from hiding drugs, weapons, contraband, etc. etc.

However, with students I always think they'll find a way
to do what they want when it comes to drugs or guns.

Baggy clothes for instance, or hiding places.

... even a hollowed-out book could work for any number of items that someone wanted to carry discreetly. Thermoses and Scooby-Doo lunchboxes would work too.

To me not allowing students to use a backpack to carry heavy books ALL DAY is cruel and unreasonable. To suspect students MAY have a drugs or guns is not reasonable and punishes the students. Call it what you want. These kids are learning fast! Kudos to them!
