(26,308 posts)I recently lost a sibling. Not supposed to happen when you are young.
My buddys brother just died of melanoma.
Another friend just had one removed. She caught it early because because a friend of hers had it and described it as like a smudge. She too had a smudge and thankfully had it looked at. She said she would have never suspected melanoma.
My dermatologist says you dont know, we do! Let us look.
My dermatologist just told me his son was doing a project in medical/dermatologist school. The project was to biopsy your own mole. The mole he picked turned out to be melanoma.

(3,445 posts)She was in the beginning stages of dementia, and I thought it was eczema and kept forgetting to tell the doctor about it. When we finally did, the doctor said he knew right away it wasn't eczema, but he had missed it, too, in her exams. She had surgery to remove it, and that was that.
My best friend in grad school was not so lucky (this was 30+ years ago). She had a mole on her back removed by her Ob-Gyn when she was visiting her parents out of state. It came back positive for melanoma but the doctor didn't tell her she needed further exams and checkups. She started getting sick, thought it was the flu, and by the time she went to the hospital she had cancer all through her. She died 4 months later.
So yes, get checked. And if your doctor doesn't seem to be interested, ask for a referral to a dermatologist.
