He might have done Baker a wicked huge favor.
The two-term governor is weighing another run, meaning a Republican could defy national trends to lead this solidly blue state for a third term.
By endorsing conservative Republican Geoff Diehls primary challenge on Tuesday, Trump underscored Bakers distance from the national party and his persistent criticism of the former president in one of the most anti-Trump states in the nation.
Sometimes it is good to have a foe, said former GOP Gov. Jane Swift. Trump does not appeal to Massachusetts independents, so it will not help [defeat Baker]. It will actually likely help to define [the Baker ticket] as not that type of Republican....(more)

(2,769 posts)Diehl has run before and was swiftly and embarrassingly defeated by Elizabeth Warren.
There's not a chance he will defeat Baker (if Baker goes for another term). If Baker doesn't run, Diehl will still go down to defeat due to 70% Dems/Independents demographics.

Baker hasn't even decided if he's running. His Lt. Gov. Karen Polito is young and could make a go for it.
I have yet to hear of a Democratic challenger

(32,626 posts)Baker does seem to be trying to present himself as more of a Republican lately. I think he's eyeing the oval office.

(38,533 posts)Baker would have been an excellent choice for the GOP nod. (Not that I would vote for him.)
Now, anyone w/ an ounce of sense doesn't seem to stand a chance.

Sorry Gov. Baker, but if Donnie Dipshit hasn't caused you to abandon the Retrumplican Party, then what will?
Maybe sitting on the sidelines, out of power is what you need.
Go Dems! Turn the MA governor seat blue!

(13,479 posts)Baker is fairly popular, and it doesnt hurt that he has disdain for Trump in a blue state.
