(1,666 posts)Ive limited them. My best is going two weeks without a soda. A Dr. Thunder or Mountain Lightning taste like sweet heaven when youve gone that long without a sugary beverage.
Edit:
What I like to do is mix non-sugary flavors in with Fresca for a fake soda.

Not that I drink it anymore, except for one or two bottles a year. Trying to maintain some semblance of health as I age.

(25,201 posts)Twenty-three samples of popular sugar-sweetened beverages were purchased in East Los Angeles, California. Beverages were selected based on the frequency of consumption by children participating in our past research studies in Los Angeles as well as based on National popularity. All of the samples were domestically produced with the exception of the Mexican Coca-Cola, which is readily available for purchase in East Los Angeles and was selected due to its popularity.

(43,250 posts)Third, the potential discrepancies regarding the type of sugar used in a few of the drinks raises concerns about the accuracy of the reporting by the manufacturers. For instance, the Mexican Coca-Cola lists sugar on the ingredient list, but the laboratory did not detect any sucrose, but rather near equal amounts of fructose and glucose, results which suggest the use of HFCS. According to the FDA guidelines, the word sugar can only be used in reference to sucrose ((32)). If HFCS is used, it must be listed in the ingredient list of the food label ((33)).

(53,936 posts)I would only drink it when I did something really good, because it is expensive compared to its American counterpart. I used to drink up to 10 Cokes a day, but that was over 4 years ago. I now limit it to one a day, except on movie nights. Still, it is probably one too many, but I love my Coke.

(25,839 posts)are also bad for you, especially if you are a woman, because there's link between those drinks and osteoporosis.
I stopped drinking soft drinks almost totally about thirty years ago, and I'm sometimes shocked when I'm in the grocery store and I see people's carts with three or four of those huge cartons of soft drinks.

(53,936 posts)I did like a lower calorie coke that came out, but then they discontinued it. Then came Coke Zero, which was really good...until they changed the formula, and we stopped drinking it. It has gone back to the almost original formula which is not bad, so we drink that, and Diet Dr. Pepper and Diet A&W Root Beer.

(66,307 posts)I can't count how many times I've had a young Hispanic man in my exam room, in no visible distress and in good physical condition (a huge number of them are construction workers), and they complain of fatigue, dizziness, disorientation, shortness of breath and general malaise. I'm experienced enough now to make my first question about their consumption of soda, sports beverages, Monster drinks, Rock Star, etc.
The response I get is almost always "Yeah, I drink, like, seven Cokes a day. " At this point, I run a screening for diabetes, and often, although not always, their hemoglobin A1C (the diagnostic test for diabetes) is off the charts.
Whether they are positive or negative for diabetes, I tell them to stop drinking all that soda and stick with water, milk, coffee, tea (provided they brew them themselves to control how much sweetener goes into it), and see me in two weeks. Two weeks later, they come back in saying they haven't felt this good in years, they have more energy, and their work is improving.
So much of it is cultural chauvinism ; Mexican Coca-Cola is very good, and they take pride in that. A lot of it is advertising. People hear on commercials that Gatorade and Powerade are healthy and will make you a great athlete. So people go crazy drinking all this horrible stuff.

But its not easy...the latest addiction for young people are those boba tea shops...tasty but sugary..i ordered a sugar free tea..got the most sugary drink by mistake i think...wow..it tasted good. I see why the young ones are lined up for boba

(25,201 posts)I was only 3 and it was 1960. Plane had stopped to refuel. My dad brought a coke from the airport into the plane. It was super sweet. We were on an all night flight to Japan. (Military was moving us overseas)
Maybe we were on the same plane! Dad was AF and was transferred to Yokota AFB in 1960 and we also had a stop in Honolulu (even have a pic). I was 5. Were you there when Kennedy was assasinated?
LeftInTX
(25,201 posts)We were in Tachikawa which appears to be only a few miles away from Yokota.
We didn't really have TV in Japan, (well it was in Japanese and was off 90% of the time) so I can't imagine the Kennedy assassination without it.
We learned about our president and his family from Life Magazine in Japan. We also learned about MLK from my mom.

We had the guys who would deliver us a container of kerosene and the daily peddlers who were always trying to sell pet rats. I always wanted a pet rat and my parents always said "No".
One day the kerosene guys picked up my little sister and took her in their truck. I thought they were kidnapping her, so I went after them on my trike. Then my mom said, "No, I gave them permission to give her a ride".

(1,654 posts)... telling us, rather unhappily, that Mexico is one of the largest per-capita soft drink consumers in the world. I have to say, the lemon soda we had there was amazing. But yes, it's a big health problem.

(19,005 posts)Many many people cannot moderate when it comes to intake of sugar in soft drinks. It's addictive and incredible harmful to the general health of society. Notice I said society, not individuals, as there are some people who are fine drinking sugary soad.

(8,168 posts)I don't drink any soda, never mind drinks with sugar in them. With the rate of Type 2 diabetes, it surprises me that so many still drink Coke. I think I had one a few years ago. Enjoyed real Coke is glass bottles that one could get in small towns in the '70s.
