"While Mr. Meadows and Mr. Patel are, so far, engaging with the Select Committee, Mr. Bannon has indicated that he will try to hide behind vague references to privileges of the former President. The Select Committee fully expects all of these witnesses to comply with our demands for both documents and deposition testimony.
Though the Select Committee welcomes good-faith engagement with witnesses seeking to cooperate with our investigation, we will not allow any witness to defy a lawful subpoena or attempt to run out the clock, and we will swiftly consider advancing a criminal contempt of Congress referral.
We thank those many patriotic Americans who are coming forward voluntarily to participate in our inquiry. The Committee is making rapid progress and will not be deterred by those who seek to obstruct our efforts."
Apparently Scavino is still hiding out, but Bannon just might be in a heap 'o trouble!

(15,062 posts)I'm hoping that means that they will get those arrest warrants dusted off post haste. They do have proper procedures to follow, I guess.
They should have had those things lined up and ready to go. We all knew Bannon was going to weasel out.

(15,220 posts)Better to stay real, and reality will show that nothing has been done to stop Trumps madness yet.
I will be the first person dancing when I see some actual punishment inflicted for all of the horrors he has inflicted. But that has not happened yet and many of us have realistic concerns that it ever will.

(9,003 posts)I share the frustration. I vacillate between optimism and pessimism, like many, but I just see so much negativity and "we're doomed" type stuff...Not saying this one crossed that line, but that's the road it was on.
I think the drumbeat of negativity brings everyone down. I'm reminded of an old saying, "It ain't what you say, it's how you say it." There are tactful ways to express frustration.
And I am not suggesting everyone be Pollyanish, either. Sometimes the truth is very hard to sift from the noise.

(15,220 posts)I dont look at things as being positive or negative. I look at things as being realistic.

(9,435 posts)Why would we expect to see anything change when so far TFG has gotten away with everything he's done? If he is ever held accountable I will be dancing too.

There is no urgency or concern for the rule of law.

I am glad that they responded immediately to the fact that Bannon threw them a middle finger.

(1,609 posts)Republicans do not cooperate in good faith, they only pretend to. This strategy has worked time and time again on democrats. "We don't want to be hostile by sending a criminal referral, it will interrupt good faith negations." Yeah... right!

Undoubtedly there'll be criminal referrals. The vice-chair, Liz Cheney, isn't going to let Dems back down if some are so inclined.
leftieNanner
(15,062 posts)But I don't think any of the Dems on that committee would back down. Jamie Raskin? Adam Schiff? Nah.

(9,670 posts)Words matter. These words aren't definitive. They allow for the outcome, but they don't mandate it.
Perhaps that was the intent, so as not to sound threatening, but it struck me as less than forceful.
leftieNanner
(15,062 posts)Those words stuck out to me too.
There must be proper procedures to follow in the committee to get these criminal referrals out the door. It may be as simple as voting to do so. Let's hope.

(67 posts)Everybody knew that they wouldn't comply with the subpoenas. The committee should have been ready to go immediately with whatever plan was needed for enforcement. The fact they have to issue a statement saying they are "considering" criminal contempt is ridiculous.

(19,186 posts)unconditional pardons. He is the only true president, after all.
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he tried it though. The number of republicans tethered to reality can be counted on one hand.

(7,870 posts)His papers and devices and bank accounts should be under warrant for material evidence. He should NOT be walking free in any sense of those words. He is an existential threat to our Democracy and to Congress, no less so than Vladimir Putin whose active and knowing agent he certainly is and has been.
So if you do not follow through, do we Democrats swiftly consider not voting in the next election? No, we are the better part of politics, but, if stonewalling is going to happen, and we get disappointed and disillusioned, the 2022 elections may not be a winner.
