Because a family friend played for them before he went to the Yankees. That family friend was the late, great, Jim “Catfish” Hunter. He grew up with my dad. I never saw him play for the A’s, just the Yankees, as (it was before my time and) I was too young at that time, which is why I’m a Yankees fan.
