WASHINGTON (Reuters) - One day after the Senate approved a temporary lift to the U.S. debt ceiling, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell wrote in a letter to President Joe Biden that he would not aid Democrats again in raising the debt limit.
Following weeks of partisan fighting, the Senate approved the short-term fix that will allow the United States to avoid defaulting on its bills in a 50-48 vote on Thursday evening. The House will vote on the measure on Tuesday.
Congress will need to find a longer-term solution in December. But McConnell has said the reprieve would give Democrats enough time to raise the debt ceiling through a procedural move known as reconciliation, which Democrats have rejected as an option for lifting the cap.
In his letter to Biden, McConnell referenced comments on the Senate floor on Thursday by Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who said Republicans had played a "dangerous and risky partisan game."

But yes of course he will finish us off if he has too, and not even blink.

The amount his owners are willing to let it tumble may be more than you and I can afford, literally.
I am in awe of how PEACEful and patient us liberals are.

Just another way to legally steal money from the ordinary guy.
Or as you say, Turtle's handlers give him his marching orders when their interests are jeopardized.
Well, we are not wired like ruthless sociopaths. So some of us just cannot wrap our heads around all of it.
A combination of denial and learned helplessness.
It is hard for us to face the reality that we have a country consisting of the greedy rich bribing corrupt leaders who dupe willfully ignorant voters.

(13,168 posts)Two bills would spell out that McConnell and Trump are responsible for most of the debt for which the ceiling increase is needed.
Otherwise, McConnell will continue cynically playing on the ignorance of the American public who don't realize that raising the debt ceiling is just paying for the debt already incurred (mainly by Trump and McConnell). It's a rotten trick and will become more rotten in December. McConnell will play this next debt ceiling gambit even more cynically, lyingly tying it to the two economic spending bills Biden and the Dems will hopefully have passed by then.

(6,829 posts)Exactly. The only reason McConnell blinked was: the elections coming up on November 2nd and Wall Street donors breathing down his neck after Biden's well-timed conference with American business leaders. He had hoped to blame the upcoming default on Democrats but the internals must have indicated the whole thing was backfiring on Republicans. Strange that. Guess economic collapse isn't a big vote-getter. And if Wall Street donors are pissed, one can imagine them threatening to turn off the money spigot if McConnell went through with his extortion/extinction plot.
This idea that Mitch McConnell had his fee-fees hurt is assuming he has fee-fees. He doesn't. The only person who pretends he does is Joe Manchin, who covered his eyes and shook his head and reportedly told Schumer that his rebuke of Republicans stonewalling was 'f*cking stupid.*. As if McConnell was on the verge of giving a full-throated endorsement of the Build Back Better plan.
"Come on, man!," to quote a favorite phrase of Joe Biden.
This is theater of the grotesque. McConnell just wiggled out of a corner he'd painted himself into, delayed the round so that 'his' team wouldn't be blindsided in the upcoming elections with bad press and withering funds.
Get that out of the way and we're off to the Hunger Games, again.

(19,958 posts)Mitch is PENO (Public Enemy Number One). He belongs in a prison cell next to the former PENO.
Does PENO want to force Democrats to use reconciliation and get rid of the filibuster in order to "normalize" those "methods" so he can later use them dictatorially to pass everything he wants...and claim Democrats made it all possible?
