Elk with car tire around its neck for two years is finally free
I am just grateful to be able to work in a community that values out [sic] states wildlife resource, a wildlife officer said.

Story at a glance
Colorado Parks and Wildlife were finally able to track down the elk and remove the tire on Saturday.
The tire had been filled with close to 10 lbs. of pine needles and debris.
An elk in Colorado is finally free after having had a car tire stuck around its neck for two years.
Since first receiving reports of an elk with a tire around its neck in July 2019 in Pine, Colo., officers with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) have attempted to tranquilize the 4-year-old bull elk four previous times so they could remove the tire, but all had been unsuccessful until Saturday.

(32,543 posts)I'd have thought this guy's antlers would make it impossible to toss off that tire. Probably the park wardens needed to cut the tire off. I'm glad they were finally able to do it.

(50,524 posts)Thats okay, because ungulates shed their antlers every year. Hell grow a new set over the winter.
And youll like this: my family owns a Boone and Crockett record book (which records the largest antlered animals killed by hunters, by state and species) because my late father is in it, and one of the things it lists is where the rack was collected. There are quite a few picked up notations, indicating the person reporting picked up a set of shed antlers off the ground and the animal they belonged to is still walking around.
