I’m confused. What is the archbishop’s position in the chain of command?

https://www.defenseone.com/policy/2021/10/catholic-troops-can-refuse-covid-vaccine-archbishop-declares/186056/

Catholic U.S. troops should be allowed to refuse the COVID-19 vaccine based solely on conscientious objection and regardless of whether abortion-related tissue was used in its creation or testing, the archbishop for the military declared in a new statement supporting service members who are seeking religious exemptions.

“No one should be forced to receive a COVID-19 vaccine if it would violate the sanctity of his or her conscience,” said Archbishop for the Military Services Timothy P. Broglio, in a statement released Tuesday.

Broglio previously has supported President Joe Biden’s mandatory vaccination order for U.S. troops, citing the church’s guidance that permits Catholics to receive even vaccines derived from fetal tissue, when no other vaccine option is available. In his new statement, the archbishop said that while he still encourages followers and troops to get vaccinated, some troops have questioned if the church’s permission to get vaccinated outweighed their own conscious objections to it.

“It does not,” Broglio wrote.

The Archdiocese for the Military Services, created by the church in 1985, claims responsibility for 1.8 million service members and their families at 220 installations. Broglio was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007.

Ummm....the Pope has said there's no valid religious reason for an exemption.

This is fucked up for lots of reasons.

sanctity of one's conscience? This is utter hogwash! The archbishop is trying to straddle the fence here, but what's needed is courage to stand for the truth. Outside of highly unusual medical circumstances, there is no reason to refuse the vaccine. The opposition to the vaccine is political, not a matter of conscience. I'm so tired of people pandering to these antivax cult members.

When the USA invaded Iraq the Catholic ArchBishop refused to answer troops questions that were concerned about the 'just war' doctrine of invading Iraq. IMHO Service members that refuse the vaccines should be discharged for the good of the service.

All the Hail Marys in the world won't clear your lungs of infection. Ego te absolvo (but I can't cure you).

Why do I suspect the Archbishop won't be emphasizing that?

You asked, we answered: Do the COVID-19 vaccines contain ...

They do not contain any tissue from a fetus. Vaccine makers may use these fetal cell lines during the following two phases: Research and development ; Production and manufacturing ; When it comes to the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, fetal cell line HEK 293 was used during the research and development phase.

Before, he was okay with the mandate, and now he isn't?
He basically went against the Pope to get along with the right-wing Bishops in the US that tried to keep Biden and other pro-choice Catholics from getting Communion?

What next -will he advise Catholic military members it's okay to refuse lawful orders from their commanding officers if those orders are in conflict with "sincerely held religious beliefs"?

Or worse, it will be okay to act on their "sincerely held delicious beliefs" and get together with one of the few "evangelical" chaplains or self-appointed chaplain assistants to, say, perform an impromptu excorcism on a fellow LGBTQ, "pagan", or some uppity female sevice-member in their unit? Or maybe it just be acceptable to harass or ever kill others for not being moral enough.

Because the Catholic League and other right-wing religious groups believe that Gawd puts greater stock in enforcing the "Moral" reputation of the State than taking responsibility for one's personal moral actions.
This is hypocrisy in action. And the guy is supposed to be a Jesuit? Pretty weak one at that.
