The horror stories that I hear daily are getting unbearable.

(23,218 posts)I was just telling my daughter last night that I will likely wear a mask in stores for the rest of my life. It doesn't bother me a bit, and I actually feel a whole lot more secure, not just from COVID, but also from all sorts of other contagious things. People are gross.

(23,218 posts)I likely will, as well.
I don't know why the MSM doesn't cover this more, it's hell out there, I hear about it nightly.
It's getting to be too much, HCWs are going through hell with this.
Please be cautious and try not to hurt yourself, there aren't any beds available for many of us due to "them."

(13,479 posts)my husband had his booster. Yay. Just waiting for my daughter to get her vaccine. Can't come soon enough.
I do think cases have leveled off here in NYC. Hope it stays that way. I'm dreading winter, but I'm also feeling a slight bit of hope that once kids can get vaccinated it will lighten a bit more.
Fingers crossed.

(23,218 posts)I'm so exhausted emotionally from hearing of young children getting intubated, it's horrific to listen to.
Thank you for doing your part.

(21,346 posts)Makes me cringe whenever I hear about it. Fortunately, in my area, although the infection rate is high and people under 30 have the highest rates, I have not heard of severe cases in young children yet.
The highest death rates here are among seniors, most of whom were vaccinated early with Pfizer. If boosters had been available sooner, they might have had a chance.

(5,334 posts)Couple of females, both with masks under their chins in front of us.
Wife got irate - we are both double vaccinated and wearing masks correctly. Asked said ladies to wear their masks correctly.
Females pulled their masks up, lots of air space around the noses - token effort.
But every time they talked, and it was a lot, the masks came down again.
I reminded them to wear them correctly. One of them told me to keep the required 1.5m distance.
Wife interjected, said we are double vaccinated and no threat, and if they were so concerned, what's with the mask on/off thing?
Checkout lady said nothing. Shop security not in sight.
Some people aren't taking it seriously here.
Plenty of school kids and older adults with masks around their chins or no masks at all.

(23,218 posts)Someone needs to be on the MSM daily describing how to appropriately wear masks and the importance of vaccinations. Those that you love and children depend on everyone's actions.
I have a friend in Pakistan that asks me "What's going on there?" They are compliant with many not even having vaccinations available to them yet but mask up appropriately and are compliant.
They have approximately 28K deaths and Ohio has approximately 23K.
He said "I thought we were the shithole Country?"
Let that sink in.

(42,523 posts)Most people at my work are good about wearing masks. One day someone I don't usually interact with came up to my desk and asked a question. I was involved in something else and her question didn't fully register in my brain. I stopped what I was doing and asked, "What?" She pulls down her mask to ask me again. I'm thinking, "Good Lord, I do not need you to pull down the mask! Just repeat what you said!"

(4,448 posts)For folks that have less than crisp verbal skills, they rely on mouth reading of the other party quite a bit.
It's a subconscious move to be understood more clearly.
I have found myself doing it. After repeating myself twice I'll take my mask down to make my statement.
Then a moment later I realize what I did.

(15,088 posts)An N95 mask and I try to shop only in stores where masks is required. Some that say they require masking and have a sign out front are actually bad about masking. Whole Foods has been reliable.

(16,286 posts)It was in effect from March 2020 to early June 2021, lifted for a while when CDC stupidly said vaccinated people didn't need masks, then reinstated in August when cases started trending upward.
The vast majority of people I see when I go shopping are masking properly (and of course I'm masking myself), and about 2/3 of adults here are vaxxed. This state hasn't had anything remotely resembling the kind of surge Texas, Florida, and other red states with lunatics for governors gave been having. I'm really glad I live here.

(15,649 posts)Assuming Southwest gets its act together.
I'm glad to know people are wearing masks there as we will be. I continue to double-mask with a cloth mama over a surgical mask and will continue as long as I need to. Two mask actually makes it easier to talk! I also am two weeks out from a booster shot.
I appreciate having this information before my trip.

(21,719 posts)Not even the employees are complying.
People I talk to are still in the "it's a hoax" and the "it's no worse than the flu" mode.
I'm in Illinois, where precautions are mandatory, but there is no enforcement.
Meanwhile, deaths here have taken off again. After about 6 weeks of zero deaths, we are now at 19 in the last two weeks.

(28,117 posts)Certainly doing so here, even with the stares...and (cough) arguments and naysayers, even on this site.
I feel like asking vaccinated, mask naysayers if they wonder why their doctors still mask up!
You have my sympathy, dear friend. I can only imagine the horrors stories you've heard from physician sons.
Proof that vaccines sometimes aren't enough:
Our vax'd son had a mild break-though and was extremely sick for a few days - he foolishly allowed an out-of-town, vaccinated friend to stay with him. This guest became very sick the next day and, naturally, my son cared for his friend and so, became sick himself. So, here were TWO healthy, vaccinated young men that became Covid positive & sick!
(However, IF he had NOT been vaccinated, I'd have feared for his life.)

(15,220 posts)Im seeing fewer and fewer masks when I go out and I still go out ONLY when absolutely necessary. My doctor said that eating out is, in her opinion, the biggest risk. Ive not been inside a restaurant since February of 2020. When I drive by one though, the place is packed.
I double mask any time Im not at home. Im vaccinated.
And I still feel vulnerable. You can do everything in your power and still get this from someone who isnt as careful.
