(43,530 posts)From a marketing standpoint. It hits all the important points: the space thing, the packaging waste, the reminder that with every purchase, bezos becomes richer.

(25,749 posts)I'd make a weekend trip to Chicago, or St Louis, or Indianapolis, and make a circuit of local bookstores.
They are all gone now.

A pleasant memory for me was the Bookmobile coming to my elementary school, I would do the 50 yard dash to be the first for Curious George.

(27,230 posts)They're both networks of independent bookstores. Biblio is strictly used while Alibris is new and used. I used to use Abe but guess who bought them?

(27,230 posts)With your library card, these two sites will let you stream movies and borrow ebooks for free. I'm not into ebooks, but it looks like they're worth checking out (no pun intended).

(42,413 posts)... it's all the other stuff they sell. They make it easy for small-time sellers to sell thru Amazon rather than a brick-and-mortar store that takes too long to build up traffic. When Jeff Bezos first started Amazon online, he was actually losing money selling books, or barely breaking even. It took a few years to iron out the kinks and to get people to trust online shopping. Now he's the king of retail.
I understand that book retailers are having a hard time competing with Amazon. But it's because they don't share Bezos' vision and they scoffed at what he was trying to do. He did it first and now he's the clear winner.
