Nobody knows when Jesus was born (if he even existed); even the Bible doesn't say. The Roman December 25th holiday was a pagan holiday celebrating the solstice and featuring peace on Earth and goodwill toward men. It existed before Christianity won over the Roman Empire and was redefined to facilitate conversions.

However, in most European languages the name is derived from Pesach, as the Jewish feast of Passover played a major role in the Jesus's persecution, execution, and resurrection. Where I grew up it was Wielkonoc, Polish for "Great Night".

The Catholic Church was good about glomming on to local traditions and adapting them.
