Easter honors a fertility goddess named Ēostre. Bunnies and eggs are symbols of fertility.
Nobody knows when Jesus was born (if he even existed); even the Bible doesn't say. The Roman December 25th holiday was a pagan holiday celebrating the solstice and featuring peace on Earth and goodwill toward men. It existed before Christianity won over the Roman Empire and was redefined to facilitate conversions.

(11,390 posts)The word for Easter in German and English does apparently come from an old Anglo-Saxon deity. However, in most European languages the name is derived from Pesach, as the Jewish feast of Passover played a major role in the Jesus's persecution, execution, and resurrection. Where I grew up it was Wielkonoc, Polish for "Great Night".
The Catholic Church was good about glomming on to local traditions and adapting them.

(11,390 posts)The name was originally All Hallow's Eve, or the day before the Feast of All Saints, November 1. November 2 was All Souls Day, which honored all the holy dead, canonized or not. Oddly, the Aztecs celebrated their Day of the Dead, honoring their ancestors, at about the same time and the two sort of grew together.
The western Celts may have observed a holy day at about the same time, but there was a lot more to European Christianity than the Celts - and after about 1000 they weren't that big an influence on the rest of it.

(22,363 posts)we did not consider Halloween as being part of Christianity. The nuns frowned down on it.
The next day was All Saints day but the two were really kept separate.

(5,268 posts)We've lived in communities where the "Christians" would come to our house while we were decorating for Halloween and accuse us of observing Satan's Holiday.
Of course, they lived in the houses that were often targeted for the toilet paper treatment by kids for handing out Bible tracks.

(25,959 posts)The Fundamentalist churches all changed their fairs to Harvest Fairs and removed the witches, ghosts, vampires decades ago down here. Of course most folks still celebrate the traditional way. A new wrinkle that started last year was trunk or treat where a whole bunch of parents bring their costumed kids & bags of candy to a large parking lot and the kids go from car to car.

"This is a movement that will not stop until it has torn down every American institution and every American tradition," he said. (1,849 posts)At another elementary school in Seattle, kids aren't allowed to wear costumes or celebrate Halloween in any way. The reason? Because of the religious wingnut parents (of multiple faiths, not just Christian) who don't want their kids to be influenced by Satan?? Whatever FOX, just making up bullshit to stir the pot.
