in my red town along with an N95 mask, got a lot of giggles & smiles, but one smart ass mumbled
"fucking liberals" as we passed each other, I turned around and said "I'm a REPUBLICAN" ! (I lied) he stood
there speechless and I added "that's the problem in this country too many people don't want to do their
part to help us get past this pandemic so this country can get back to normal & put people back to work"
He just stood there dumbfounded & I walked away.
Don't know how to post pictures yet, but here's the T-shirt

Why the hell are they re-roosting up here in Colorado?

(4,291 posts)At first, I avoided shopping there because of the way they treat their workforce. Meanwhile, the Walton family rakes in the big bucks, and then actively supports those politicians that align with their evil intentions.
Now, during the pandemic, I choose to avoid places that draw the hard-of-thinking, and those who are looking for a fight. I simply do not engage. Including and especially Walmart shoppers.
About a year ago -- during the final weeks of the election campaign -- I wore a t-shirt to a local watering hole: accompanying an image of Smokey the Bear on the front was the printed message "Only you can resist fascist liars." That provoked a puzzled response from one of the wait-staff: "How do you know who's a fascist?" My response was along the lines of "by what comes out of their mouths." Zoom! It went WAY over his head.

(8,810 posts)I tell these type people, if they confront me, that I do not follow politics and I am not a Dem or Repub. I tell them that I gave up years ago on both parties, because I believe that the politicians from BOTH parties are ALL crooked! Interestingly, without exception, they stop, think for a moment, agree with me, and then turn away and move on.
It works every time........
My reply to one un-masked guy that got in my face about me wearing a mask:
I said: my wife has cancer. Due to the treatments she has NO immunity to any bacteria or virus, not even the common cold.
If I were to not wear a mask and brought home covid and gave it to her and she died, I would not be able to live with myself.
They guy stopped, and actually apologized, not even realizing that he had just agreed that without a mask I could not only CATCH the virus, but SPREAD the virus....
In either case, it makes them stop and causes them to think, vs them continuing their ignorant rhetoric and rants........
We tell lies that will HELP people, not Kill them!

(10,429 posts)I wore this shirt to the grocery store a couple weeks ago
and have been wearing it often when I go out. No negative comments, and several people asked where to get one.
WHen I lived in Wichita, I sometimes replied to people "I'm registered REPUBLICAN", so as not to lie and because I wasn't having to choke on the words "I'm a republicon". Since there was no chance of a Democrat winning anything, the only way to have at least a little influence was to register R and vote for the least-crazy in the primary, then the Democrat in the general.
DENVERPOPS
(8,810 posts)I have heard many a Repub talk about being registered as a Dem to vote for the worst Dem Candidate in the primary, and then vote for the Republican in the election.
Maybe we should spread that trick among the Dems. Of course, it would have backfired in the 2016 election, because the most putrid candidate was Trump........
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,841 posts)a given state.
I used to live in Kansas, and a lot of people who are actually Dems would register as Republicans so as to vote in the Republican primary. I'd say they were equally divided between those who voted for the moderate, sensible Republican and those who voted for the worst one hoping that then the Democrat in the race would win. Unfortunately, the registration numbers were thus skewed even more Republican than they should have been, meaning often there was no Democrat running for that office.
Register and vote for the party you really prefer, if you're in a state that requires party registration and you can only vote in the party primary for that party. If you're in one that doesn't, then do what you think is best. But if you're in the former state, think real hard about registering as Independent or Non Affiliated or however your state does it, because then you give up having any say in the primary. Which strikes me as a poor voting strategy.
DENVERPOPS
(8,810 posts)Haggard Celine
(16,844 posts)Here in Mississippi, we don't register by party. Everyone is technically an independent until they vote in the primaries. If I vote in the Republican primary, I can't vote in the Democratic runoff, and vice versa. I often vote in the Republican primary because that's where the election is typically decided. The Democrats often either don't have a candidate or there will only be one candidate running. I always vote for the least objectionable Republican running.
Several years ago there was a primary between conservative incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran and Tea Party challenger Chris McDaniel. It was a nail-biter. If it hadn't been for the Democrats who voted for Cochran, we would have ended up with McDaniel as our Senator, and that would have been horrible. He's a complete asshole. He raised hell about the results and tried to have the election overturned because of all the Democrats who voted. He really showed his ass, and he gave up what political clout he had. I'm glad we have this "open primary" system.

(18,600 posts)That just a week or so ago many were up in arms over a "Fuck Biden" flag and how profanity in public shouldn't be accepted. Some even suggested it should be criminal.

(24,726 posts)And I stand my ground.
In fact, a friend just forwarded me the following link from a recent Daily Show.
https://fb.watch/8D_JdL_zNS/
So, here's my view: it is NOT about using the word fuck, it is about civility / incivility in our political dialogue.
I think it models incivility to our young 'uns...who are watching.
And incivility on sterioids is what got us here.
hurple
(1,306 posts)And only has as much meaning, or civility, or incivility, as you allow it to have over you.

whathehell
(29,067 posts)those words only have power over.me "if I let them"?
hurple
(1,306 posts)Oh for fucks sake.. there is a difference in words not having power to offend, and words not having meaning.
So, this is more along the lines of me deciding the word "it" is offensive to me and demanding everyone else stop using... um... it.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)and no, dear, your "argument" really doesn't hold. No one wants or "chooses" to be offended -- The person hurling the insult is the one making the "choice" and it is they who should be, and are, held responsible, under the law in harassment cases, for instance.

(18,600 posts)In the military and even longer officiating soccer I can't think of a single swear word that I personally find offensive in any of a dozen languages. However many people are offended so I self-moderate.

(2,444 posts)Surely a different word could be used.
Young kids may have heard it, but really don't need to see adults parading it/advertising it around.
That is my opinion.
cilla4progress
(24,726 posts)It's almost violent.
I have thought a lot about this.
Why does it feel so good to swear? Have you tried using different words - "oh, shucks," "darn it"? It does not provide the same rush! Believe me - I'm a big time swearer, and I would not even share with you some of my favorites! I always feel better after...well, in some ways, but also worse, in a different way. I get relief, but I feel shitty afterwards.
When our daughter was growing up she would get VERY UPSET when we swore! I think it feels like a debasement. Crude, vulgar - as it is meant to, and why I get so much relief from it?
I have also observed others' reactions when I swear. Sometimes they even take a step back! I have learned never to swear in professional situations even if others do. I just don't like how it makes me feel. Again, uncivil.
Each to their own, though!

(3,951 posts)She said, it must be because of the vaccine, which I thought was weird. I said I was very grateful to have had my shots. She said she refused to get the vaccine. I said I knew three people who were dead because of Covid. She told me a customer yesterday told her she was just scared of the shot. Checker tells me it took 30 years to perfect the malaria vaccine. At this point I just said, you do you, but I want to see my grandkids grow up.
She obviously likes to bring up a controversial subject which is unhelpful, unprofessional, and unhealthy. I thought about telling the manager that her conversation topic pissed me off and was wildly inappropriate. I may still.

(33,643 posts)"it took 30 years to perfect the malaria vaccine"
You may hear that again, so if it ever comes up, ask ...
"So, what was wrong with it ... before it was perfect? What was the problem, exactly? Did the public receive imperfect shots during those 30 years of development time?"
Watch them flail cause they have no idea the answer to any of those reasonable questions.
Then just say 'did you know Malaria isn't even caused by a virus, and that's why it was so much harder to develop and took so long'?
