Winooski area residents voice their opposition to F-35 training flights
By Lana Cohen

Sep 9 2021

Appearing Tuesday night at a meeting of the Winooski City Council, more than two dozen speakers complained that the planes’ thundering noise is affecting their hearing and mental health, and increasing their worries over what would happen if an F-35 were to crash in the most populous region of Vermont.

The speakers, all of whom expressed their frustration with the jets based at Burlington International Airport, addressed councilors and three Air Guard members for more than three hours, in person and remotely.

“I have witnessed F-35s flying over Landry Park on a beautiful sunny afternoon,” Winooski resident Camille Clark said. “It was extremely painful to watch about 25 kids putting their hands on their ears and grimacing.”

The Lockheed Martin-manufactured F-35s can reach up to 115 decibels of noise, according to the Air Force. That’s almost the equivalent of standing next to sirens and can cause hearing loss in less than two minutes. Exposure to noise above 70 decibels for an extended period of time can damage hearing, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s information on noise and hearing loss.

“Exposure to loud noise kills the nerve endings in our inner ear,” the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration wrote on its website. “The result is permanent hearing loss that cannot be corrected through surgery or with medicine.”

The F-35 stealth fighter, the centerpiece of the U.S. military’s air forces and the costliest defense program ever, began arriving at the airport in South Burlington about two years ago as a replacement for the F-16. The full complement of 20 jets is now in place, with planes going on training runs twice a day, four days a week. They also make occasional runs at night and on weekends.

Your comment, is what about. Others do it so it is fine. FYI, your link is less than satisfying. Doesn't mention that WV produces and exports the machines. Burlington VT houses them, read my link and see how the residents feel.

Ask someone who is hard of hearing/ deaf how they would feel raising their families in such an environment. If you don't have that problem you are one of the lucky ones.

PS. It is you that needs more material. Lot's more in at VT digger direct from the resibents of Burlington VT.

Carolina. And that's what the Vermont National Guard wants, and that means hundreds of jobs in my city. That's it." Bernie Sanders.

"You need some new material." I guess you're supposed to get mad. All anyone has to do is Google about the $1.5 trillion program and plenty comes up. Nobody's accusing Bernie of being beholden to Big Military or anything. Don't know why anyone would get upset mentioning the "reality of the damn plane." That's politics. Status quo.

Or could be swayed if he offered him MORE money?

Why do people feel that he couldn’t possibly believe in supporting a major industry and job provider in his home State? You know, like Bernie Sanders supporting F-135 production?

One is supporting and working WITH Biden.

One is obstructing Biden and putting future Democratic control at great risk. That's what matters.

I don't know why any Democrat would take manchin's side on this.

It was interesting. I've been to Burlington on vacation a few years ago, and if I lived there I'd be completely opposed to having that kind of plane based there. When I lived in Wichita, there was a similar sentiment about having the B1 doing so many flights out of McConnell. People claimed the noise cracked their windows. But a wide open area like Kansas does seem more fitting than Vermont.

In any case, this side-discussion is more appropriate to pointing out how the MIC has successfully taken over, despite Eisenhower's warning. In not only every state, but every congressional district in every state, there are multiple military projects and/or bases. That's deliberate. It's impossible to make cuts to the military without the endangered contractor racing to dozens of reps whose districts will "lose jobs". The F35 is one of the best examples because it's spread all over.

I think the point of this thread is Manchin's hypocrisy, which is common, in that he takes a lot of out of state money and direction then whines when someone from out of state makes him uncomfortable. I could be mistaken, but I don't think I've ever hear Sanders whine about out of state opposition to the F35.

Personally, I think Democrats should start running non-stop ads and go on toure in AZ and WV repeatedly listing everything in both bills that Manchin & Sinema are blocking. Let the people there see what's at stake.
