Anti-mask anti-vax a-holes just completely f'd up a week of my life

If everything had gone according to plan, I'd be visiting a very elderly relative right now. Due to my work schedule, the travel has been planned for months

But a week ago Monday, I had numerous very short interactions with someone who tested positive for COVID several days later. I found out a week ago Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile I had unavoidably twice been at a location serving a vulnerable population

I informed work and was banned from location for ten days. I informed the folk serving the vulnerable population. I took a COVID test a week ago Friday: they originally promised results by "Sunday or Monday" then modified to "Monday or Tuesday," but it seems these are just nice stories

After discussing the situation with relatives, I cancel my planned visit: why take a chance?

I attempt to do my work from home -- but the local internet has become badly overloaded as the pandemic has progressed

The testing lab is backed up: I check regularly but don't get test results until Thursday

At this point I'm thrice-jabbed, symptom-free, and the test is negative

I inform work: the ten-day ban is withdrawn. I call the folk serving the vulnerable population: they let me return with some unrelated paperwork. I start looking for another date to visit my very elderly relative

It'll be like this until the pandemic ends. Thanks, anti-mask anti-vax a-holes!

4. Bummer. I don't have direct experience with waiting for test results

but my sister does. This is not for her, but for event planning that she is in charge of. It's maddening as hell for her, but what she has found to be true EVERY TIME is that they WILL get back to you quickly, by the next day, if the test if positive... otherwise if negative they keep you dangling until they get around to it. Don't know if it's staffing shortages or whatever, but this is what her experience has been and it's very frustrating for her, and even more so for you by having to cancel a trip.

It's so simple to get a vaccination shot, it's free and they are available everywhere, often without even an appointment - to save your life! What better motivation can there be!

Yet we have anti-vaxxers here in New York as well - 31 new cases in my mainly rural Upstate county according to yesterday's headline. And I now know someone who died of Covid, my Dad's cousin, one of my favorite family members, who had just turned 88 died in June - and she was fully vaccinated! Her siblings and kids still don't know how she got it.

Wishing you a safe trip for your visit, hope you can reschedule it soon.

7. I had hoped to be on a fun road trip about now, but bagged those plans when the delta variant took

off. When we had deaths double, then triple in July. So now I'm shooting for the middle of February. It depends on my knowing flying is safe. There is no way for me to fly across country, get off a plane and not know I haven't been exposed. I and the people I would see are vaccinated, but I won't take the chance of spreading it.
