If You Live in Virginia, Work in Virginia to Elect Democrats.

Work in your own state to counter Republican voices. If you live in some other state, work in that state to do the same.

When someone asks what you are doing in Virginia, answer that you do not live in that state and that Virginia Democrats are responsible for getting out the vote and getting people out to protest, if necessary. That is the only possible answer, since people not living in that state cannot participate effectively in that state.

If you live in a Blue state, work to help keep it blue. If you live in a Red state, work to elect Democrats to every possible office, from your city and county to your state legislative districts and congressional and Senate offices.

Don't dilute your power by attempting to affect elections in other states. You will not be effective in any way in doing that. But, in your own state and local jurisdiction, you can be a powerful voice. Use your energy and your available funds to support Democrats where you live. Both will be better spent there.

Work where you live and you will have the maximum possible impact.

If the OP's advice:

Don't dilute your power by attempting to affect elections in other states.

was followed, we never would have won the two GA Senate seats. Dems from all 50 states help drive them on to victory via many different ways. Dems in deep blue districts and states especially can help without 'diluting their power' in the slightest.

My husband and I spent most of today writing letters for Terry McAuliffe and text-banking for Phil Murphy.

to help local and state Democrats win and maintain their seats. I figure I can’t complain about Democrats doing nothing while I also do nothing. So I volunteer, donate and try to GOTV.

and writers aren't limited to any one state or election.

Volunteers, please listen to campaigns in any given state and help where they ask you to help. If Stacey Abrams, organized labor, MoveOn, AOC, whomever/whatever seeks help, answer the call.
