The transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg delivered a blunt warning on Sunday to Joe Manchin and other Senate Democrats who are forcing Joe Biden to scale back his climate crisis agenda: your resistance is going to cost lives.
Manchin, senator for the coal-dependent state of West Virginia, opposes elements of the presidents clean energy performance program (CEPP), a $150bn central plank of his Build Back Better plan and $3.5tn spending bill.
White House officials have acknowledged that clean energy and clean electricity provisions are likely to be dropped from the bill to secure the support of Manchin and fellow sceptic Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona. Both votes are critical in a divided 50-50 Senate.
Buttigieg appeared to express his disappointment in Manchins stance on Sunday, telling CNNs State of the Union that the holdout politicians stonewalling of Bidens ambitious climate plan could be deadly.

(8,201 posts)They want to be seen as fiscal conservatives but I don't think they are weighing the costs of climate action vs. the costs of cleaning up after ever-worsening climate disasters.
I mean, that should make sense even to people who don't think we're teetering on the brink of creating an uninhabitable planet.
