No, really.
Evangelicals can't get enough of conservative Jesusthe judgy oneso they want to put him everywhere: on Starbucks cups, in schools and even in the 'ween.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Halloween, also known as All Hallow's Evethe precursor to All Saints Day on November 1is not hallowed enough for the likes of some Evangelical Christians.
Instead, they would prefer to transform the holiday into "JesusWeen."

(9,291 posts)I have been fighting these same assholes for years. Let the kids dress up , and get candy. So my house gets all decked out, I give treat bags with toys. I get around 80 kids a year. Unlike the above religion trying to take a fun moment from a child, Im giving back.

(52,155 posts)When I was growing up there were churches that didn't do Halloween and didn't let their kids participate at school. It has grown over the years (or maybe my being in a different region matters here) but this has been a thing for decades.

(42,279 posts)All Hallows Eve was the Celtic New Year's Eve and a time when the worlds merge; an in-between time when ghosts could return, fortunes could be read and strange spirits (or the Fairfolk) could be abroad. In America, it has become a time for playing with our fears and learning to overcome them--something that scares certain types of religious bigots because fear is their stock in trade.

(14,853 posts)... on everyone else like right-wing authoritarians.
I've met plenty of other Christians who maybe don't like homosexuality or other things, but they don't try to take ACTION against it. They have more of a "live and let live" attitude about it, even if they're confused by it.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-wing_authoritarianism
Right-wing authoritarians want society and social interactions structured in ways that increase uniformity and minimize diversity. In order to achieve that, they tend to be in favour of social control, coercion and the use of group authority to place constraints on the behaviours of people such as political dissidents and immigrants. These constraints might include restrictions on immigration, limits on free speech and association and laws regulating moral behaviour. It is the willingness to support or take action that leads to increased social uniformity that makes right-wing authoritarianism more than just a personal distaste for difference. Right-wing authoritarianism is characterized by obedience to authority, moral absolutism and punitiveness towards dissidents and deviants.
Surprise, surprise... given all of Trump's promises in 2016 to PUNISH various people:
The One Weird Trait That Predicts Whether Youre a Trump Supporter: And its not gender, age, income, race or religion.

...Ive found a single statistically significant variable predicts whether a voter supports Trumpand its not race, income or education levels: Its authoritarianism.
Thats right, Trumps electoral strengthand his staying powerhave been buoyed, above all, by Americans with authoritarian inclinations.

I tend to agree that this phenomena would be a primary factor since other traits stem from that.

(14,853 posts)Right-wing authoritarians exist all over the world, but many of them are attracted to the more action-oriented evangelical churches in the USA. Such as their compulsion to convert others rather than accepting them as they are.
At one time, the Roman Catholic church was more that way. But that kind of pushy behavior is more common among evangelical Christians today, at least in the USA.
They'd be easily drawn to some other authoritarian figure besides Trump, but he's their current hero for promising to "lock up" Hillary Clinton and the like.
The QAnon movement is another example. They actually believed that "Q" worked within the government with the highest clearance, and his promises that all of the Democrats and Republicans-in-name-only (RINOs) would get sent to Guantanamo Bay by Trump, where they'd be executed!
Edit: And I'm sure there's some churches labeled as "evangelical" out there, but their leaders preach more tolerance of others.
I doubt that most black evangelical Christians are as pushy and authoritarian as the white ones, given their history of dealing with intolerance in this country.

(68,539 posts)no Episcopal church for miles...and they sent home letters to parents about how kids should not trick or treat and how Halloween was the devil's holiday. I of course ignored their silly missives and my kids had fun. We found an independent church nearby that helped the poor and welcomed everyone.

(14,853 posts)... there's indeed some exceptions.
It started out as more liberal than other denominations too, with them and Quakers generally being the most anti-slavery for example.

(210 posts)...as a Christian who loves Halloween and has celebrated it many times with my pagan friends....uh nope. Halloween is fine just the way it is, thank you. In fact, I always leave a little something out for my ancestors on Halloween. I'm sure the raccoons appreciate the special treat, but I love l this way of honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed. I don't see how it and the more mainstream traditions like trick-or-treating, bobbing-for-apples, or telling spooky stories are in conflict with any of Christ's teachings.
