The other 4 were true believers in their plot. Powell knew it was wrong but, he went along for the sake of his own ambition.

That's understatement to put it mildly, of course.

He was what he was, plenty of good but also tragic failure of principle and judgement in someone who assumed great power and took oaths that he knowingly broke.
