the purpose of justifying an aggressive war that killed hundreds of thousands of civilian men, women, and children. and yet he is being worshipped as some kind of hero. W, Cheney and Powell will all escape justice. that's is profoundly sad IMO

(5,450 posts)the reason he decided not to run for POTUS was because the country wasnt ready for a black president.
I seem to recall that he sort of disappeared real quickly when it was made clear that there never was any proof of WMDs.

(2,969 posts)The world awaited his judgment on the WMDs. What a tool to legitimize the war pigs. Fuck him. Lionizing liars is all about a pathological culture and worldview.

(1,450 posts)with Iraq after 9/11 and he went to our Intel folks several times to make sure they were giving him their best intel. Yet, his own Department's intel was doubtful. He was used, fooled, and tooled. I was angry too when he made that presentation. Yet he is a soldier who risked his life for his belief in this country. He isn't the first nor will he be the last to do so. Still, I believe he was a decent man who admitted to his mistakes wore his thorns with a dignity not expressed by many governing officials. He was not an evil man like so many now in power. None of us knows the extent of dishonorable actions in any war by our enemies or ourselves.
I honor him for his service. And i think he should have resigned when asked to convince others of something he didn't believe himself.

The fellating and hero worship of this man is completely undeserved.

(38,489 posts)...TWO wars in Iraq. To me, those are legacy-negating fouls. It is scurrilous to apologize for wrongs that are just repeated.

(90,765 posts)and lies that worse will come along, emboldened by knowing exactly what they can get away with, and cause even more harm to the country and harm to people.
Well, they were right.
The Bush administration's crimes, abuses of office, and lies were an attack on our democracy and democratic institutions - in addition to all the damage those actions caused for other people - they were also an attack on our country.
And they got away with it. All of it.

What a cretin.
Glad he's gone.

(36,745 posts)All this crap was the result of the 2000 stolen election.
If that election had been fair, no Bush, no Cheney, no Powell, no 9/11, no wars.

(5,017 posts)I've been subscribing for a few decades now (possibly starting in around 1989, definitely by 1992 or so) and they do excellent work. They didn't used to say they were progressive and have been known to call out both sides but (not surprisingly) most of their critic highlights the right wing and corporate bias of our media.

(239 posts)It makes me sick to hear people lionizing Colin Powell! He is a war criminal! Just like Bush, Cheney, Rice and Rumsfeld! He lied to get us into that totally unnecessary Iraq war that cost us trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives. And at least 500,000 innocent Iraqi's died! And all for what? So the US could get its dirty hands on Iraq's oil. They should all be in prison! But no, Bush is now looked upon as a lovable old senior statesman and Powell is being treated like some sort of hero! WTF?
There will be no justice done and that is the sad truth. I wish there was a hell so Powell could rot in it! Ugh!

(81,261 posts)I remember watching him and thinking "well, dude, they sure hung YOU out to dry." And worse. He willingly submitted himself to being hung out to dry. Without question. At least as far as we know. It would have been hard but supremely honorable for all of history if he'd refused that assignment that day. And he was just the man with the stature to be able to do it. It shot his credibility all to hell. And for some of us, PERMANENTLY so.
We all knew that this was coming, of course, especially after Powell nominally assumed the role of the moral conscience of the Republican party.
Whatever else he did before or after, he knowingly lied to the world in order to justify the invasion of Iraq. That alone should be his entire legacy.

(1,396 posts)The most horrendous regimes in history are known for state sponsored torture. It's sickening how desensitized many in the U.S. have become, truly horrific.
