Hooters employees are pushing back against new revealing uniforms that include shorts so short that they're 'like underwear'Some Hooters employees are speaking out on social media against a new uniform they say is too revealing.
Several staffers took to TikTok this week in a series of viral videos about new shorts that are so short they've been described as "like underwear." In the videos, employees are airing their grievances with the skimpy uniforms and comparing the length to their previous shorts, which are considerably longer.
"Soooo Hooters got new panties. I mean shorts," wrote one TikTok user. "Love my job but don't love wearing undies to work," wrote another.
The restaurant chain - which is known for its "craveable food and wings, cold beer, sports, and of course, Hooters Girls" as the company states on its website - has long faced criticism for its sexualization of women. Critics have called out the chain for outfitting employees in revealing uniforms and requiring certain hair and makeup standards.

(10,150 posts)My friend is a manager at Hooters and their food is actually decent because he manages it well. But why go skimpier? Twin peaks does that

(111,297 posts)It's in the Oak Lawn gayberhood of Dallas. I posted a thread about the place a few years ago. I think that the servers wore boxer briefs instead of speedos though.

(7,397 posts)That has been known to exploit women for decades, and then complain when they exploit them. Right
.
Probably a coordinated media campaign more likely, this has gotten tons of free advertising and now people will want to go see the new shorts. Genius if so
.

I think theyre all in on it actually, just a strategy to drum up business.

(8,387 posts)The suggestion is whether the controversy is actually advertising.
If so, it is effective. We all know Hooters has skimpier outfits.

(2,403 posts)And I guess the reply I was replying to sounded a lot like blaming the victim and/or not believing the person making the complaint.

(8,387 posts)"Hooters Employees Subjected To Sexual Objectification" - is this news? Well, it was true before this development. Whether it is or is not a sincere news story, it is undeniable that the message is being publicized, for free, to their target demographic.
Sort of like "Residents Complain About Non-Stop Street Drug Sales At Corner Of Oak and 16th". No doubt the residents are complaining, but I'm new in town and was looking for a place to buy crack. Thank you, news guy.

Google The Wing House Uniforms and youll see.
Hooters has been struggling for a while now. This is an attempt to create new interest and traffic.
And FWIW, the original Hooters in Clearwater along with another 25 or so Florida stores are still held by the founders, and they have not changed the shorts, per the article.

(32,346 posts)... I'd start wearing men's underwear. Knit jockey shorts, and of course there'd be something on underneath. But the point would be to say to my boss, "OK you want me wearing underwear, this is what I'm wearing."
Yeah I'd probably get fired, but at least I would have made my point.

(26,548 posts)I didn't really pay attention to the atmosphere, as the focus was on a fairly raucous party for the bachelorette.
Just because I liked the food doesn't mean I would go back for it, and I never have gone back.
I think it would be a particularly uncomfortable experience to go as a lone woman, as opposed to being in a large group of women, one of whom was handcuffed to a full size male blow-up doll.

(101,715 posts)Exploitation is not alright with me. And yes, I worked weekends at a restaurant that made a killing (as did I on tips) during SEC football games to earn money for my first post-graduate degree. But we wore clothes that made us feel comfortable and management was strict as hell with the drunks to ensure they behaved and ALL employees were respected. THAT is the damned difference.

(1,954 posts)The servers are just folk, like you said, trying to make a living, but wherever I go their wings are to die for. More than once I've eaten myself sick on them; the breading, spice and meat-to-bone ratio are amazing, and I personally make it a point to compliment the chefs (And tip the waitresses very well for the trouble of having to bring me a plate or two of wings.) Though I've not been to a PPV in the past few years, last I knew, they're one of the few "Sports bars" that offer PPV events for free on their screens; It'd be a fools errand to make subpar wings at home and still pay $X for the PPV as well.
Still, your point is well made. An employee should be comfortable in their uniform/getup, and it seems like these new uniform changes are pushing that boundary or crossing it entirely. I've never gone to Hooters for the "Hooters", and I will boycott them accordingly if the servers feel this new uniform crosses a line.

(8,387 posts)Millions of chickens have their wings harvested and are returned to their homes wingless, and sometimes with very little medical attention.
Without their wings, they cant run as fast, and are vulnerable to predators because of this permanent disfiguration.
But, you can help. Your donation to the Regenerative Institute will fund valuable genetic research into helping chickens gain the ability to regrow their wings.

(10,198 posts)It paid for 6 years of college. The shrimp and wings and fries were decent. Her restaurant mostly had a fun buzz. The rare occasions when a customer got out of line the manager intervened. She had no illusions as to why the mostly male clientele came.
