I got a letter from the member of a family my mother had helped out, I get these a few times a year. After my dad died when I was 10 my mother decided to return to bookkeeping since that is what she was doing when she met my dad, by the time I started high school she was employing a dozen people in her office which was nice for our small town, we weren't wealthy but did better than many people in town thanks to her hard work. After she died my sister and I met with her pastor to plan her funeral and thought we could use the small chapel since there would be many people, the pastor smiled and told us to expect a very large crowd. We didn't know until then that she had asked her pastor to identify families of good people who were struggling, she then gave them $100 every week to help with groceries and she was helping 5 families at a time. The pastor said she didn't want any recognition at all, she remembered struggling to put food on the table after my dad died and felt the need to help. I had never understand why people would stop me on the street and tell me that me mother was a great lady. My sister and I decided to keep the tradition alive since it was so important to my mom, I just wish we had known.

(113,612 posts)sister well. Perhaps she just wanted to be Mom when it came to you and your sister, without outside considerations?

(70,268 posts)i didnt realize until my mom was in her 70's how smart she was.
my da was a genius, and it showed. my mom was a quiet genius.
i never knew that the reason she was a secretary was because she had been 1st in her class in hs, and got a scholarship. she worked n a hospital xray dept. when i was little i'd visit her at work, sit in the kneehole of her desk and listen to the click of the keys. i think she did about 200 wam on her old royal. much of it in latin in those days, which i dont think she took in school or anything.
it was at that point that i realized she didnt win at bridge all the time because she was lucky, and that not everyone does the sunday crossword in pen.
how great that you are able to carry on your mom's tradition.
a lovely way to remember her.
