Bannon Wants to Destroy Our Democracy. He Must Be Prosecuted.

For those who study authoritarianism, Steve Bannon's refusal to respond to the subpoena issued by the Congressional committee tasked with investigating Jan. 6 is hardly a surprise. Bannon's aim is to destroy our democracy, and responding to a subpoena issued by a democratic judiciary would affirm the legitimacy of a system he seeks to overthrow.

Bannon had big dreams to become a little Duce in Italy, training Europe's next right-wing "gladiators" in an Italian monastery, but that project failed. Now he's back in America, which in his mind is the new frontier of autocracy. He already feels empowered to discard the rule of law and respect for judicial process. "We control the country. We've got to start acting like it," he said recently on his War Room podcast about his plan to prepare tens of thousands of "shock troops" for an anti-democratic takeover of government once the Republicans return to the White House by legal or other means.

For the creators of the Trumpcult have a problem. 2024 is too far away to satisfy the angry demands of Trump's base for action. Even the 2022 midterms are a year out. Without a catalyzing event, it can be hard to keep up momentum. That's why many authoritarian leaders, including Mussolini, who Bannon admires, have made "permanent revolution" a propaganda point.

And that's why our political situation will become more volatile over the next year, and all bets are off after the midterms, whichever way the votes land. Bannon has already floated a scheme that hinges on making Trump Speaker of the House, and then president once Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris are impeached — a prospect sufficiently alarming to prompt Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) to introduce a bill to restrict the speakership to House members.

The gravity of these possibilities, and Bannon's openness about his seditious aims, make concerns that an eventual Department of Justice prosecution of him might look "partisan" misplaced, to say the least. So are fears that pursuing Trump and his inner circle could lead to civil unrest. We've already experienced unrest, on Jan. 6, and the only way to avoid an even bigger calamity is to hold the organizers and perpetrators of the deadly coup attempt accountable.

A new fly-on-the-wall documentary by Alison Klayman, in which she trailed the ‘populist’ preacher for 13 months, shows just how empty his message is.

Bannon may be the poster child for far-right “populism” and “economic nationalism”—euphemistic slogans for neo-fascism and neo-Nazism—but The Brink (in theaters March 29) is no puff piece on the founder of Breitbart News, whose role in the Trump campaign, and subsequent stint as White House Chief Strategist, helped make him an extremist celebrity power broker. Director Klayman’s film is a revealing and horrifying snapshot of her subject during 2017 and 2018, culminating with the midterm elections that saw the Democratic Party re-take control of the House of Representatives. An intimate fly-on-the-wall portrait, it details Bannon’s efforts to further foster the reactionary movements spreading across Europe. In doing so, it lets him hang himself with his own words.

That occurs from the outset of The Brink, with Bannon discussing his 2016 feature Torchbearer (whose title he can barely recall, and which starred Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson). Reminiscing about the production’s various overseas locations, he talks about how he travelled to the Auschwitz concentration camp (“My shit in Auschwitz rocked!”), where he found himself surprisingly unmoved. Instead, he was bowled over by his tour of Birkenau, which he describes as “the most haunting place I think I’ve ever been.” His voice then gets excited, and his eyes light up, as he begins explaining how Birkenau was built from scratch by the Nazis: “It’s precision engineering to the nth degree…It’s an institutionalized industrial compound for mass murder.” It’s clear he was, and remains, tremendously impressed by the craftsmanship of the facility, and the means by which its German designers and engineers “detached themselves from the moral horror of it.”

Then, as Klayman cuts to footage of the White House and National Mall monuments, Bannon continues, “That’s when you realize, oh my god, humans can actually do this. Humans that are not devils, right? Humans that are just humans.”

5. BANNON HAS NEVER HIDDEN HIS AGENDA

When he he was the person in charge of Tump's campaign in 2017 When a reporter asked Bannon if he was going to reform or reorganize the government after Trump took office Bannon replied "Hell no, I am going to take it down".

After he leased an abandoned monastery from the Italian government he started work on making it a barracks for training storm troopers. When the Italian Government found out what he was doing they canceled lease and asked him to leave the country.
