WAPO: All eyes on Manchin after Republicans again block voting rights legislation

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/voting-rights-manchin-senate/2021/10/20/caba5168-31a6-11ec-a1e5-07223c50280a_story.html

“If there’s anything worthy of the Senate’s attention, if there’s any issue that merits debate on this floor, it’s protecting our democracy from the forces that are trying to unravel it from the inside out,” Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday.

But the realities of the Senate — with a razor-thin Democratic majority and a united Republican minority empowered by the long-standing filibuster rule requiring a 60-vote supermajority to advance most legislation — continue to make progress difficult and wholly dependent on the willingness of key Democratic senators to change their views on modifying the Senate’s rules.

On Wednesday, Republicans blocked the latest attempt by Democrats to bring up a voting rights bill. The vote was 49 to 51 and 60 votes were needed to advance the legislation. Schumer joined Republicans in voting no for procedural reasons.

Wednesday’s vote was meant, in part, to demonstrate the depth of the Republican opposition to one of the holdouts over changing the filibuster rule, Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), who played a leading role in crafting a narrower alternative to the sprawling bill that Senate Republicans blocked in June.

When he saw it would not pass he voted no in order to be able to reintroduce it later.

The spotlight. I think that's his whole game. He wants the spotlight on him. That's it.

Unfortunately, if he finally is convinced, we'd still have to get Sinema.

They are dooming themselves to a blind hatred from non-white Americans (the rising Majority). Looks to me like they are trying to create an Apartheid system in the USA.

They'll block anything that helps non-white people, especially where voting is concerned. They'd like to go back to the 1950's.

I was a little kid in Queens in the 50's, and it was totally segregated. We had no non-white neighbors at all. Not one.

Allows him to bring it up for a vote again.

I will sleep better when we have a one time lift of the filibuster to guarantee all Americans the right to vote -and the DOJ the laws to hammer the States making partisan, race-based voting laws.
