(102,126 posts)Those providers who have been administering these Moderna boosters early (sans authorization) are unlikely reducing the dose and that is among the key reasons why they should have waited.
Also important to note that no one is authorized to administer these third doses of Moderna or second dose of J&J until CDC-ACIP guidelines come out. They meet tomorrow and Friday. Moderna was given an authorization only for the severely immunocompromised, but the issue today is for the more generalized use of third dose boosters as per the guidelines.

(102,126 posts)That said, I have little doubt your friend will find someone willing to administer the Moderna now. That said, I hope those who may be doing so before authorization realize they are liable--especially if they administer a full, rather than half dose--and a severe reaction results--however low that probability. Patients think such providers are doing them a favor--up to and until something adverse occurs.
Two providers in CO have already been investigated and removed from further vaccine access because of serious failure to follow all authorized procedures for administration and storage. One is under State Board of Medicine review as well--the other may be under pharmacy review, but I've not yet heard.
These procedures are for our and our patients' protection. I take them seriously and would like to think all would. I suppose I can be relieved that they aren't handing out a prescription of ivermectin at least.

(102,126 posts)ACIP meets today. So NO Are they doing it anyway and have they been for months? Yes. It does carry risk because approval includes settling the issue of full or half dose. So, it is coming, but only FDA has weighed in.
Yes, immunocompromised are getting it with CDC approval, but I'm talking about the steps today for the generalized booster recommendations. It is the non-immunocompromised for which the issue of full or half dose becomes an issue.

(102,126 posts)of a half dose is addressed by CDC-ACIP. FDA is not the authorizing agency but the regulating agency. Step I with FDA approval has been accomplished, but CDC-ACIP is responsible for nationwide authorization of vaccine use.

(16,728 posts)My Internist stated there would be no side effects being I had the Moderna shots and that the ingredients were very similar.
So far, no side effects. Not even a sore arm. Had my Flu shot 3 weeks ago.
