I hope she rots in hell.

Yeah, I stand by it. She fits the definition.

(9,173 posts)Use anything approaching a gender-oriented insult on women, though, and watch the alerts fly. It's the DU Double Standard. They should probably work on that. Either allow all gender-oriented insults, or none.

(8,833 posts)hag is a hag. I know the three witches from McBeth would be sad that you thought hag was sexist.

(58,785 posts)and no doubt also rightly be taken as a slur against women. Douchebag is unisex, even primarily used for males, but some would naturally experience it as a slur against women. And any use could be considered sexism, women don't own offence.
We could try to take the high ground and avoid all slurs.
But that does raise another problem. Calling her congressman insults all members of congress and congress itself, and could be considered sexist by some, but the same for "congresswoman." And even calling her Boebert insults other Boeberts everywhere.
Referring to her as a "woman" or "female" would be to insult all women. What to do?
Another way to seek the high ground might be to allow a little wiggle room behind the lines we all draw. Maybe consider, before launching an attempt to suppress or erase expression, whether suppression of innocently meant speech might be the worse offense.
Or ban talking about this particular woman altogether. Because, no matter how anyone puts it, she is just naturally offensive.

(79,052 posts)kind of like an eel. They have the barbels near their mouth, and rough tongues. Very few people have found them pleasant to eat, largely because they have a nasty aftertaste difficult to get out of your mouth. As far as I know, the only culture that values them are found in Korea, where some men consider them to be an aphrodisiac.

(31,308 posts)Also I tend to feel sorrier for the victims and their loved ones than Alec Baldwin. I'm sure he feels like shit and did not intend to kill anyone, on the other hand he's still alive.

(31,308 posts)a reminder if you will. I do not doubt that Baldwin is suffering immensely at this moment. Because he's famous, this story becomes mostly about him. Victims matter too and I hurt for them and their families.

(29,949 posts)Empathy for all parties is not mutually exclusive.
Perhaps the family prefer the privacy of Alec being the one getting all the press.
Funny how the people involved have no time to process events themselves before the public judges and juries decide.

(15,463 posts)that there were others impacted here just because Baldwin's name is splashed around on media sites. I can safely entertain both ideas. But thanks.

Who had access to prop guns on that set.

(2,160 posts)the circumstances were the same, but instead of Alec Baldwin the actor had been Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, or some other more right wing actor.
Would our sympathies and reactions be the same?

(9,173 posts)Those are all still human beings who would feel shock and guilt and be distraught. I would feel bad for them. If this were a no-name actor involved probably most people would be sympathetic and accept it was an accident, even if some blame can be laid--but apparently Baldwin is a lightning rod and everyone with a grudge will crawl out of the woodwork.
MustLoveBeagles
(16,406 posts)Yes my sympathies and reactions would be the same. I don't agree with the political views of Clint or Chuck but as another poster said they're still human beings with feelings and I'm sure both would be devastated if something like this happened to them. I would honestly feel badly for them and wouldn't want people to rush to judgement before an investigation is concluded.
