(7,309 posts)I could only imagine what people of color are feeling. It's a national disgrace. My heart is just wrenching for Elijah's family and friends. RIP dear young man.
The Magistrate
(96,043 posts)This was a bully-boys killing carried out over a length of time sufficient to establish premeditation and intent.
Really, I do not see much need for a trial. A summary bullet administered in front of an audience of local police officers pour encourager les autres is the proper and gentlemanly course.
Accounts of this are among the most disgusting things I have ever read.

(4,469 posts)Elijahs last words:
I can't breathe. I have my ID right here. My name is Elijah McClain. That's my house. I was just going home. I'm an introvert. I'm just different. That's all. I'm so sorry. I have no gun. I don't do that stuff. I don't do any fighting. Why are you attacking me? I don't even kill flies! I don't eat meat! But I don't judge people, I don't judge people who do eat meat. Forgive me. All I was trying to do was become better. I will do it. I will do anything. Sacrifice my identity, I'll do it. You all are phenomenal. You are beautiful and I love you. Try to forgive me. I'm a mood Gemini. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Ow, that really hurt! You are all very strong. Teamwork makes the dream work. Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to do that. I just can't breathe correctly.

(9,989 posts)Calling the cops on harmless people who aren't doing anything wrong should be a crime in itself. Sometimes it's like trying to hire your own hitmen.

(2,285 posts)I'm a retired special education teacher. Taught for 37 years. I taught dozens of these young men over the years. I can see any one of them in this same situation.
Pray that justice is brought down on them like a mighty river.
There's a million things I want to say here, but right now I just need to quietly weep because of the terrible thing that was done to this beautiful young man.

(9,989 posts)There was a vigil in his name and people brought their violins to honor him. They were playing, and the cops swarmed in like they were doing a massive drug bust. Just plain hateful.

(13,849 posts)I am the parent of an adult DD person. She goes to the store by herself, on public transportation.
I believe I need to have a conversation with her about what to do if ever stopped by police. Despite the fact that she is white.
I have seen panic in her eyes twice in her life. Once the first time she had a seizure. Second, one time when she was choking on food.
It's possible that she would lash out if someone in uniform tried to restrain her. The panic would surface.
She's white. Likely safe. But............

(6,699 posts).... over the years. Not just people of color.... not just young males.... but predominantly so. It is going to take some time to clean up the police departments across the land. They are going to feel unappreciated and defensive.... but we have had centuries of corrupt law enforcement on the streets. It's time to finally put an end to it.

(58,785 posts)so between that and the charges brought, I'm wondering what legal support these officers may have through the police union.
