... and it's a lot of people, and they're saying a lot.
Makes me wonder if adult diaper sales have skyrocketed in DC due to certain Republicans shitting themselves.
Some people are saying that Trump plans to run in 2024 - because he's counting on being a sitting pResident shielded from prosecution.
Makes me wonder how many GOP Trump-enablers are counting on the same thing - because they'll be in need of a pResidential pardon.
And please spare me the "they're all going to get away with it" rhetoric. I'm old enough to remember when people said Nixon and his people would sail unscathed through Watergate, and John Gotti would never see a day in prison.

(7,435 posts)It was, for instance, the end of the GOP running worthy presidential candidates. While it may be debatable whether GHW Bush was a worthy candidate, the rest of the pack were jokes in a jar who couldn't swing a majority of voters without lying and/or committing treason.

I did follow Watergate as I could (and his resignation was announced at a C,S,N&Y concert I was attending in NJ - place went crazeee with joy): I wonder if the timeline for that is longer thanI remember!
🤔 Welp Google is my friend so I'll go find out! 👍
PBS's Google Headline -
"The Complete Watergate Timeline (it took longer than you realize)"
Well, aha, that means something!
Off to read. 👍
6/17/72 WG Break-in to 8/8/74 Nixon's Resignation
A bit more than two years.
Still, some helpful to us serious stuff/info/actions has to happen by end of '21 to earlyish '22 to boost our Dems for the Mid Terms.

(23,663 posts)many people are believing that Trump and his cronies will never be held accountable due to the lack of charges so far.
Compare time lines.
It has been 9 months since Trump left office. He left the country in a much worse mess than Nixon did. Biden did not get ANY transition help, but did get a LOT of obstacles thrown his way as well as hidden bombs of people that Trump appointed as internal opponents of Biden. Plus a pandemic and flailing economy. Yet, we are seeing infornation coming out as a result of investigations.
The Watergate break-in occurred during the 1972 campaign, but was quickly hushed up. I remember hearing a report of it early in the morning on the hourly radio news when it first happened. I listened most of the day for additional coverage on radio or TV, but there was nothing more. I was young and politically naive enough to think that it was such a big deal that there would be immediate repercussions, but the election and Nixon's second term moved on as if nothing had happened.
It was months before it made the news again. At first it was just a trickle of info here and there but no official investigation or follow up. Even after a Congressional committee began hearings, the attitude in general was that there was nothing very serious about it and that it surely did not involve the president. I remember people writing off the hearings as politically motivated sour grapes from Dems. Some even said, "So what if Nixon was involved? It's normal politics."
As the hearings revealed more and more information, as well as what WaPo and Deep Throat revealed, more scandals came out, e.g. AG Mitchell and his wife. People who realized where the investigation was headed but seemed to have forgotten their basic civics classes, said things like, "So why don't 'they' just fire him and get on with the business of running the country?"
It was not until August of 1974 that Nixon resigned, 2 years after the break-in. We had a Dem Congress and more liberal SC then than today, and it still took that long.
It has not even been a year yet since the J6 insurrection and since Trump left office, no longer able to protect himself from within the WH. The Dem margin of control in Congress is slim and we face numerous obstacles to investigations - refusals to testify, a Republican party in lock step opposition to every legal action.
But DOJ is investigating the crimes of Trump, his associates, and the J6 insurrectionists in spite of the obstacles and is gaining momentum in collecting evidence and witnesses. Meantime, regional jurisdictions like NY and GA are also collecting evidence and witnesses.
Complaints that DOJ is "doing nothing" are not accurate. They come from impatience with the process and sometimes sound like kids on a family road trip asking, "Are we there yet?"

(6,141 posts)Times are different today.
I remember Watergate as well. But all Americans got their news from local and national newspapers and the 3 main TV stations broadcasting the evening news. That was it.
Today, information travels at light speed via the internet. While criminal investigations may take the same time as before, citizens access and thirst for information has a short time frame. We've gotten used to a society where information is fast and often overloaded.
Patience is no longer a virtue.
I'm not complaining, just pointing out that societal norms have changed since the 70s.

(1,202 posts)Remember that trump has skated for over 4 years when you factor in the Russian collusion and everything associated with that. His crimes go far beyond the insurrection stuff.

(23,663 posts)he had some control over the processes of investigation.
For the first 2 years he had a Republican Congress that would do nothing and his own appointed AG who would do nothing. When Dems got control of the House 2 years into the term, they impeached him but Moscow Mitch was the Senate majority leader so a conviction was impossible. Trump appointed Barr who ran interference for him against the Mueller report and shielded him and his cronies from subpoenas to testify.
It has only been the last 9 months that there has been a Congress and AG willing and able to pursue investigations, collect evidence, and interview witnesses. In the first couple of months, Biden needed to establish a functioning staff and clean house of Trump traitors still in government. It took time to get a functioning cabinet, including an AG. But at least finding and arresting J6 insurrectionists began right away.
So it is not the fault of Dems that Trump skated for 4 years. It is not the fault of Biden, Garland, Schumer, or Pelosi that Trump skated for 4 years. They are on it now, and in spite of continuing obstacles, they are getting results. Instead of whining impatiently, we should be glad that they are proceeding and getting results.

(1,202 posts)The DOJ has burned bridges. They were corrupt as was evident even by your post. Let's see if they've righted the ship. Time will tell.

we have a president as experienced and capable as Biden at this moment in history. We had many good candidates in the primaries, but only Biden had the experience and extensive knowledge of processes to take charge in such a mess and lack of cooperation in the transition.
It is also why I am grateful for people like Stacy Abrams whose hard work and dedication gave us our slim majority in the Senate. We need more Staceys and fewer armchair complainers.

The less it appears the DOJ is exacting political revenge, the more effective theyll be prosecuting politicians.
The calm excites me.
