"SNIP......
House Democratic leaders on Thursday abandoned a second attempt to clear the Senate-passed bipartisan infrastructure bill as progressives held firm to their refusal back it without a concrete agreement on a separate social spending package, The Hill reports.
Its the second time House Democratic leadership has punted the bill and it came after President Biden made a rare visit to the Capitol to beseech House Democrats to help him advance his agenda.
Punchbowl News: The House will come back next week to try again to advance Bidens agenda.
Axios: Democrats had hoped to to use House approval of the infrastructure bill to boost their candidates in the gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia on Nov. 2.

It isn't the House's fault that the Senate is being obstructed.

(7,509 posts)Since vast majorities of the country support what's in the BBB bill, especially those in West Virginia.
Nothing moderate about being the vanishing minority radical holding up passage.

Who are you labeling the good, the bad and the ugly actors? This is not a movie set, it is members of Congress and the American people who's very lives are at stake.

(43,499 posts)playing games and refusing to say that they are 100% all in on the already massively reduced BBB framework.
Given Manchin and Sinema's game-playing and obstructionist history, and HUGE overall 2 bill slashing of Biden's proposals (including removing entire giant, key programmes that were cornerstone Biden campaign promises) it is no wonder many other Dems do not trust those two.
The Progressives months and months ago compromised and came down from a 2 bill total for new spending of $10 trillion to match Biden's $6.1 trillion total proposal.
They watched the BIF get absolutely gutted by Manchin and Sinema, with almost 80% of Biden's new spend shredded out (2.6 trillion slashed to 550 billion), and now have accepted another massive gutting of the BBB, literally slashed in half, from 3.5 trillion down to 1.75 trillion.
That stripping includes massive cornerstone programmes/central Biden campaign promises like Family And Medical Leave, Tuition Free Community College, Dental/Vison coverage for Medicare, most all wealth taxes/ and high earner Taxes (Trumps tax cuts are still largely intact) and Prescription Drug Price Negotiation savings, etc etc all now ripped out and tossed in the bin.
Manchin and Sinema have 'compromised' a grand total of $250 billion between the the two bills. They have also stripped-out what us closing in on 2/3rds of Biden's new spend between the 2 bills.
Biden and the progs and most of the rest of the Dem caucus have compromised 15.2 TIMES MORE in terms of total new spend dollars let go than Manchin and Sinema have allowed to be increased, a total of $3.8 trillion in cuts. The progs have let go of 30.8 TIMES the amount of Manchin and Sinema's 'compromising' if you look at the original proposals they laid out early in year.
The progs (and Biden and almost all of the rest of the Dems) have given in and given in, and still Manchin and Sinema are playing games.
No amount of spin and blame-shifting can change those simple mathematical facts and the actions by the two obstructionists.

(29,322 posts)It is mainly 2 Democratic Senators and a handful of House Members not to mention corporate interests cutting the bill. They rarely use the leverage they do have and they said back in June they would for the reconciliation bill which was a much better bill than the bipartisan bill.

(7,261 posts)The nearly 100-member Progressive Caucus has said all along that they want both bills to pass. They originally wanted $5T, came down to $3.5T, then apparently settled on under $2T. You call that all or nothing? Bullshit.
Scorched earth is Manchin and Sinema deciding for the entirety of Congress and the American people what they can and can't have.
Scorched earth is EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN voting no on issues that the majority of Americans want
Yet it's the 100 member Progressive Caucus that's in the wrong here? Again BULLSHIT.

(45,120 posts)concrete agreement on a separate social spending package. I'm guessing they have no trust in a couple of Senators. a smart move and deservedly so considering the actions of those two.

(6,242 posts)this but they played right into the Republican's hands. I am so disappointed in Cori Bush, she needs to get out of the limelight and be a team player on this. I want all those progressive programs but it has been clear for months that they need to back down and give the president a win.
AZProgressive
(29,322 posts)Not to mention the tax hikes Sinema wants out of the bill makes it more difficult to pay for it.

(22,913 posts)...just make vague "promising" comments without outright saying that they will vote for a Build Back Better bill that conforms to Biden's framework. That is why there is a lack of trust in moving on one bill without the other. If Biden could have said that Manchin and Sinema had committed to voting for a bill that was consistent with his framework, things would be different. But he could only say that he fully expected that all Democrats would vote for it. That is a very different statement, stressing expectations rather than commitments.
Progressives will swallow a lot to support the President. But they want the deal honored and at this time there is no real assurance that it will be until both bills are ready for a vote.

Delay till the thing fails completely & takes down the Gov races that would have been bolstered along with it.

(68,667 posts)50 50 Senate. We won't get it all. This will force the party to move to the right not the left.
AZProgressive
(29,322 posts)There are a lot of other important bills like voting rights legislation that cant pass because of the filibuster and obstruction from mainly 2 Senators.
There has been a heavy lobbying campaign against the reconciliation bill and it wasnt hard to miss their ads. Money in politics seems to be preventing anything from getting done.
Not sure how what happens in federal government impacts a governor race but all I can control is what happens in Arizona so more focused on preventing Kari Lake from winning there.
