The absentee votes are counted: India Walton wins Democratic primary in race for Mayor of Buffalo
Evan Anstey
Jun 30, 2021

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The absentee votes in the primary election for Mayor of Buffalo have been counted, and India Walton’s name will be the one on the Democratic line.

With a stunning victory that saw her total 11,132 votes by election night, it appeared that India Walton would be the Democratic nominee in an uncontested November election. She had more votes than incumbent four-term mayor Byron Brown, who had 9,625.

If the roles were reversed, and it was India Walton (or any other left-wing Democrat) running a write-in campaign, people on this site, and the entire Democratic Party would be raving about her being a sore loser and attempting to divide the party.

Walton won the Democratic Party primary. If this is the case, I can handle it, but I will never take "Never run as an independent or third-party candidate" seriously again. If it's good for three, it has to be good for me too.

So voters got to see what'd happened the first time when only 20K came out, got a second chance, and 50K came out and chose to reelect their mayor. How often does that happen?

Agree this can't be third party. When both ran against each other, both times, as Democrats, can't even be second party.

...the four-term Democratic Mayor of Buffalo.

Byron Brown, on the other hand, has been a Democrat for decades and a very popular, successful mayor. HE didn't initiate the "running against Democrats" thing, janey-come-lately Walton did. He was just doing his job.

Parenthetically, he grew up not far from where I lived growing up - a straight shot down Francis Lewis Boulevard in Queens.

....Democratic mayor.

And getting to the point (shot) you were trying to make about Democrats running against Democrats - Democratic Mayor Byron Brown was going to run for re-election. Someone wanted to run against him so suddenly became a "democrat" in order to do so.

The attempted point fell flat.

Thank GOD Buffalo wised up and is returning their Democratic mayor for another term.

Sadly, the world is changing, and our country is leaning further to the right in front of our eyes. The answer to that is not to make our party more left leaning, that will only result in us losing more seats at every level of government.

PS - I threw in that "where he lived" as a curious, coincidental anecdote, thanks for trying to shit on THAT too!

Fri Nov 5, 2021, 05:10 PM
Nov 2021
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman

No true Scotsman, or appeal to purity, is an informal fallacy in which one attempts to protect their universal generalization from a falsifying counterexample by excluding the counterexample improperly. Rather than abandoning the falsified universal generalization or providing evidence that would disqualify the falsifying counterexample, a slightly modified generalization is constructed ad-hoc to definitionally exclude the undesirable specific case and counterexamples like it by appeal to rhetoric. This rhetoric takes the form of emotionally charged but nonsubstantive purity platitudes such as "true, pure, genuine, authentic, real", etc.

Philosophy professor Bradley Dowden explains the fallacy as an "ad hoc rescue" of a refuted generalization attempt.

Similarly, the no true Scotsman fallacy is also often used in an attempt to define Christianity. For instance, some liberal Christians will often disqualify militant pro-life Xians or snake handling Xians as not true Christians in an attempt to purify their view of Christianity. When in fact, other than some extreme tenets, their basic belief systems may be aligned.
