Youngkin ran a damn good campaign while McCauliffe didn't define Youngkin as a Trumper enough at first.

Define a new person to a boogyman (Trump) and then the alternative as something positive.

I didn't see McCauliffe doing that

I live in Virginia. I’m burned out on the number of elections. The number of elections is not only exhausting, it’s expensive, unprofitable, and look what it does to turnout.

... there are fewer of them but it seems the GOPer turn out when we don't.

Make all elections on even years and on the first Tuesday in November?
