PoliticoRepublicans opened up leads in the citys most competitive City Council races Tuesday night, even as Democrats were set to again dominate the citys legislative body.
In Queens, the GOP was well positioned to hold onto its lone Council seat after a hard fought race: Joann Ariola, the chair of the borough Republican party, was leading progressive Democrat Felicia Singh by a margin of 68 percent to 31 percent with 68 percent of votes reporting.
Republicans were ahead as they attempted to pick up a Democratic seat in southern Brooklyn, with pro-Trump candidate Inna Vernikov up against Democrat Steven Saperstein by 63 to 37 percent in early returns.
And on Staten Island, Republican David Carr led in his quest to hold onto another Republican seat hotly contested by Democrats, where Sal Albanese ran as a conservative Democrat with law enforcement union support. The margin there was 60 to 32 percent.
