The lesson from Virginia is this:
We are the goddam majority in America and its time we started governing like it.
The fatigue of seeing meaningful progress get stymied by a weaponized filibuster, while toxic disinformation and white supremacy grow unchecked is real.

Wounded Bear
(58,685 posts)a bunch of the priviledged few in which any individual can prevent the majority from overriding him. It's pretty much designed to prevent anything getting done without super majority (or greater) consensus. Senate rules aren't in the Constitution, so it could be changed if we can convince people to give up their individual power for the good of the whole. Pockets of that linger.

(5,720 posts)At times it seems we do.
I remember reading about House majority leader Dick Gebhardt watching tv on election night and looking shocked as the 1994 election returns came in.
We lost the house and senate that year.
The house was the worst because we held control for 40 years at that time.
So, i would hope, we can wakeup and end this habit of sleep walking into a nightmare, that our party always seems to find itself in, from time to time.

(1,364 posts)We need to celebrate our accomplishments like winners - think Tiger Woods.
1. Homo and Trans Sexuals - lets celebrate that they can be married, adopt children, be in the military openly, get spousal medical benefits and Social Security benefits. This was not possible 10 years ago. WE WON!!!!!
Yet the trans men in a women's bathroom and trans women in men's bathrooms is a bridge too far for independents and some democrats. This showed to be a huge issue in Virginia when a boy (trans) raped 2 girls in the girls bathroom. Because we could not find common ground on this bathroom issue and say "yes" boys/men should not share bathrooms with girls/women we lost votes.
2. Schools - We have made huge inroads electing women, trans and POC to school boards, local, state and federal government positions. WE WON!!
But when a white male elected official tells a suburban mother that she has no say in what her children learn at school, coupled with republicans telling them that their children are going to possibly learn about violent wars and about slavery before the age 18 is a losing issue. We need to find common ground on this issue.
3. Defund the Police - More and more police are going to prison for their crimes, video tapes are making believers out of the masses, the only silver lining in Covid is that we now know the identity of cray cray policepersons. WE WON!!
But when we call to defund the police we are putting independents and some democrats on the defense and they are fearful. Instead of defunding the police the message should have been "Fair Policing for All"
Conclusion - LET'S CELEBRATE OUR WINS!! We need to find common ground on losing issues or we are destined to repeat the Virginia loss.

(1,153 posts)They are ruthless and just do what they want to do. Maybe it is time we have some new young blood at the top of the House and The Senate. I am not so sure they can get anything done anymore. It is also time to deal with the insurrectionists that still live in the House and the Senate. Schumer and Pelosi have done nothing to any of them for trying to overturn the election before Jan 6th. They work for the most part four day weeks and had seven weeks off came back and then off another two weeks. It`s time to get down in the mud and kick the shit out of the republicans. If something isn`t done, 2020 will be a total wipe out for us. I don`t think the people at the top are willing to do anything. Hell, they can`t even work much over 130 days a year. It is very upsetting to see them so unconcerned. I think this election cycle is a make-or-break year for both sides. If the Republicans win big and take the WH with the orange man, we will never see a majority again. Their election laws will see to
that.
