...of the NLCS?
Wow. Thank God President Obama trounced Romney in debate #2. I can't imagine the ratings will be all that high.

Unfinished business, though. 1968 and 1984 aren't enough in my lifetime.
My boyhood hero was a great choice, however.

(39,171 posts)tv stations pay $340 million a year in fees - that is what funds FCC operations.
hack89
(39,171 posts)you have to pay for fox news. fox owes the US a free running of that debate.
hack89
(39,171 posts)they don't owe the US jack shit. Just like every other broadcast station.

(5,842 posts)News flash...October means MONDAY Night Football and baseball playoffs.
If the campaigns don't want to compete against those events then don't schedule debates that fall on potential game days.
If you really want to get to brass tacks, if Obama had bothered to show up in debate #1 this debate may have been mostly irrelevant to his political future.

(5,842 posts)Restaurants and bars should close at 6 p.m so as to not provide any distraction to what comes to the five or six percent of the population who have paid no attention to the election to date?

(150 posts)Bars and theaters and basically everything else should be shut down for the debate?

(150 posts)aren't they serving the public interest?
Also, should these stations shut down all programming during a debate, except the debate?
progressiveinaction
(150 posts)ESPN doesn't receive this money to "serve the public interest" that I'm aware of.

People who have already made up their minds will probably watch or do something else.
Divine Discontent
(21,056 posts)most people have made up their minds, and those who have to see a rather pointless NFL game (it's only reg season, and if you're not a fan of either team what's the point of missing the final presidential debate), or a winner goes to the World Series baseball game, will be about 30 million people total, so that leaves about 50-55 million to watch this I'd guess. I'm just looking for the president to present all he's done good for America concerning our standing overseas and protection at home.

(8,554 posts)While the deciding game of the NL playoffs was definitely not something that could have previously been planned for, it will still be a difficult choice for many tv viewers. Putting a crucial debate up against Monday Night Football was pretty dumb, I think (and I could care less about MNF), but now, with this Cards/Giants contest stretching all the way to seven games, it's gonna make it a tough decision for twice as many sports fans.
Divine Discontent
(21,056 posts)And I know Detroit plays someone tonight. So, that's another state not really in contention either.
I can understand watching a game 7 if you're a baseball fan, but if you're a person that is concerned about America and an adult - you gotta watch some of the debate, even if a huge baseball fan. I think 50 mil will watch.
countryjake
(8,554 posts)and tonight may be the deciding factor in our own relationship, ha, as we both would rather see the debate, but flipping to check "scores" might just turn into WWIII, I'm afraid.
I could make a remark about being "adult" and Monday Night Football, but I won't. Let's just say that I am not a fan of football.
Divine Discontent
(21,056 posts)but then watching the debate, and flipping back to the game immediately after closing remarks. And, if he's a big football fan of one of those teams, it's not going to go off until after 11:20 I think, so he's not going to miss but a little more than a quarter and a half. He can see the full 2nd half. Hoping no war starts up! LOL

(14,040 posts)at this point in time, is delusional. We have a war still going on, the Arab Spring and talk of war with Iran. The American populace is tired of war and I think many of them want to see where RMoney stands on continuing wars.

No way he should have been allowed to get off the hook on this one.
Monday Night Football was an automatic and playoff baseball is no shocker.
Everyone knew and everyone knows Weird WilLIARd is a clusterfuck in this area, therefore a deal of some kind was cut, this is Obama's strongest and most widely credible area.
Stuff like this is never an accident.
