Compare my post from 2 days ago to comments being made todaybluewater (4,930 posts) Thu Nov 4, 2021, 12:33 PM I'm staying positive and will support President Biden's agenda & how he must implement it. President Biden has consistently tried to get Senator Manchin and Senator Sinema on board and has made compromises to appease their concerns. If the President Biden says we should pass the infrastructure bill today, I would say "sure thing" and urge my fellow Progressives to do the same. If President Biden says a 1.75 Build Back Better Bill is the best we can get right now, I will say "fine" again and urge everyone to pass that within weeks at the latest. As a progressive, I feel it is vital that we continue to support the President and whatever he decides his current agenda has to be in the face of current opposition in Congress. Let me climb up on a soap box here and use my prophet-in-the-wilderness voice: Fellow Progressives, don't be left holding the bag as Manchin and Sinema continue to obstruct the President's Build Back Better framework. Don't get blamed for ANY bill not passing. Continue to support the President and his efforts to get both bills passed as soon as possible. And I'll risk saying this.... you know how the blame game works. If a progressive Democrat loses an election, we are told it's because they were too progressive. If a moderate Democrat loses a race, we are told it's because some Democrat, not even a person in a leadership role or holding office or even running for office, said something too progressive. So, let's not get blamed for not supporting the President's stated objectives, even if he has to modify those due to the political balance in Congress. /Preacher Mode OFF ![]() ![]() ![]() Ok, why did I re-post this besides the obvious need to be self-congratulatory and pat myself on the ass? Because I knew that unwarranted and broad brush criticism would be directed at Progressives here on DU in general. And sure enough I was correct. Today, threads have started up complaining, yes, complaining that "some" unspecified "folks" here on DU are not happy enough that the infrastructure bill passed and are concerned that the Build Back Better bill might not make it thru the Senate. Sarcastic comments like this were made: [they] didn't get the ponies we thought we were promised. Not soon enough, anyhow. I think they're still in a shipping container somewhere. ![]() Ok, are these really the type of comments anyone should be making TODAY when we should be celebrating the BIF bill passing and be coming together, united as Democrats preparing for the 2022 midterms? I think not. ![]()

2. From what I can see
Some members are frustrated at the squad congress-people who voted against the bill. That can only be seen as an attack on progressives if one identifies themselves entirely through that handful of politicians. The majority of progressives supported the bill. Of course, some people do care more about their favorite pol than anything else, but that is their problem. Similarly, some members identify progressives entirely through that handful of politicians. Both are unfortunate positions.
I understand that SOME self-identified progressives interpret everything as a slight and revel in playing the victim. I find it a colossal bore. I see that as only contributing to self-created rifts in the party, of which some Democrats of all stripes seem to participate in. I myself often vote to the left (in recent municipal elections, for example) but don't use the label progressive. I tend to be pragmatic at the federal level. Make of that what you will. |

3. "I understand that SOME self-identified progressives interpret everything as a slight"
And it continues....
When OP's are UNSPECFIC and VAGUE in whom they are referring too but use phrases such as "folks" and, as you just did "SOME self-identified progressives" it's clear that they have no regard about the broad range of fellow Democrats here on DU they are actually smearing with that broad brush. Thank you for so clearly making my point. ![]() |

7. Perhaps you should read your own post
In which you assail all of DU (except for the few that you identify as your people) for hurting your feelings, while you call my post a broad brush despite the fact that I point out that the majority of the progressives supported the bill. What I find puzzling is that for you and some others, being a progressive seems to be more about group affinity than policy.

9. The ad hominem attack : "In fact for some like you"
The last refugee of a failed argument.
But let me memorialize that comment in it's entirity: while only some progressives enjoy feeling aggrieved. In fact for some like you, being a progressive seems to revolve more around that than policy positions.
So, your basic ad hominem attack amplified by projection? And thanks again for continuing to use such a broad brush to smear and vilify a vague and unspecified groupf of fellow Democrats here on DU, it continues to re-enforce the point of my OP. Best regards, ![]() |

11. Why the trepidation? You just attacked me directly.
Let me repost your personal attack:
while only some progressives enjoy feeling aggrieved. In fact for some like you, being a progressive seems to revolve more around that than policy positions.

13. I named you specifically
because of your objection to the word some. You demanded specificity, so I offered it.
I don't happen to think that your stoking the flames of division, as your OP does, is making DU a safe place. You decided that the criticism of the 6 or 7 Democrats who voted against the infrastructure bill was an attack on all progressives. You took that very specific criticism and decided to make it broad-brushed. |

16. UNFOUNDED ACCUSATION: "You decided that the criticism of the 6 or 7 Democrats who voted against"
![]() Where did you pull that out of? My re-post was of an OP I made BEFORE the vote and URGED all Democrats to vote for and SUPPORT the bill. My comments in the in THIS THREAD were about posters smearing unspecified posters her on DU. If you have ANY LINKS where I even mentioned, let alone defended, anyone who voted AGAINST the bill please post them. In fact, in the interest of fairness, I demand to see links to support your unfounded accusations against me. You are making a strawman argument, another sign of failing to prove your contentions. ![]() |

18. Here is the link
Because I knew that unwarranted and broad brush criticism would be directed at Progressives here on DU in general.
And sure enough I was correct. complaining, yes, complaining that "some" unspecified "folks" here on DU are not happy enough that the infrastructure bill passed and are concerned that the Build Back Better bill might not make it thru the Senate. https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=16025147 I take your point about the thread you quoted in your other post. Yet you criticize more than that here. "Today, threads have started up. It would appear there was ONE thread, not "threads." Perhaps there are more, but I didn't see them. Instead, I saw this: https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=16022542 It appeared to me that you were making a broad brushed attack of multiple DUers who posted threads criticizing today's vote. That is what was in my mind when I responded to your post. I apologize for making what you felt was a personal attack. Tact is a continual struggle for me. |

19. That's not a link by me defending anyone that voted against the bill.
Last edited Sat Nov 6, 2021, 07:11 PM - Edit history (1) Nor is a link to me criticizing anyone that was dismayed at the 6 Democrats for not voting for the bill.
You seem to have read something into my comments that was not there. In fairness, I can understand how it's easy to make incorrect inferences about my post when so many other threads are being made and discussed. I thought I was being clear, but perhaps not clear enough as witnessed by our exchanges. Again, in all sincerity, thank you for the discussion and enjoy your evening. ![]() |

6. If the BBB dies, the midterms are gone
I think all factions here understand the truth of that
You're not wrong about your observations. Although, Manchin and Sinema have probably taken a far worse (but well deserved) word-beating on DU than progressive pols in the past few weeks. In fact, the progressive bashing here is oddly muted given the results |

8. Thank you. Criticizing specific people for their actions as individuals or as a group is fair.
Using a broad brush in vague descriptions of fellow posters here on DU seems, well, in a word poisonous.

12. You have to know that doesn't extend to the favored politicians
If a Duer criticizes AOC, for example, we are told that we are being mean to all progressives. You have to know that. Claiming otherwise is disingenuous.
In the case of today, the politicians criticized were identified through their votes. The criticism was against those specific politicians, yet you and a handful of others decided it was all about yourselves. |

14. WRONG : "the politicians criticized were identified through their votes" So WRONG
Here is the post those two rude and snide comments were made in, it was not about Politicians but was about unspecified posters here on DU:
Infrastructure Bill Must be a BFD, since folks are calling for Garland's sacking
and claiming that the BBB has no possible chance to pass now. Anything to deflect from a major victory with the Infrastructure vote. If anything good happens, we are sure to hear about all of the bad things that will inevitably happen. Some cannot simply celebrate a victory. They have to attempt to minimize it and point out all of the things that have yet to be done. It's frustrating...to say the least. That's the OP of the thread that these snide and rude comments were made in: [they] didn't get the ponies we thought we were promised. Not soon enough, anyhow. I think they're still in a shipping container somewhere. ![]() Sigh. ![]() |

15. Fair enough
I myself didn't even understand that post, or at least the connection between Garland and the infrastructure bill.
You must, however, have observed that any thread criticizing AOC results in a handful of Duers claiming that they themselves have been insulted. It's not occasional but in any thread about her. That said, I would have thought you could make your criticism in the thread you quote rather than creating your own thread with broad-brushed remarks. |
