Trump's ex-communications director has warned that if the former president wins a 2nd term he would establish an autocracy in the US. The thought of the Trump family ruling over the U.S. for the next 50-100 yrs.

(58,785 posts)it really hit me that RW voters were going to put this wannabe-monster only one election away from the presidency.
A great deal has been written now, by many expects around the planet, about the very grave danger we're in. The Washington Post changed the slogan at the top of its front page to "Democracy Dies in Darkness" shortly after tRump entered the WH.
"Democracy Dies" Incredible that this warning is blaring here.

(58,785 posts)suggesting the FBI's Trump-Russia investigation hadn't found anything and inferring it was about to wrap up -- instead of expanding, with 100s of agents assigned. This big article supposedly summarized the topic for voters right before the election.
Of course the NYT was smearing Hillary and the Democratic Party and promoting Republicans very systematically all along. My husband and I knew that, even counted the dishonestly negative headlines many days, then looking to see how they covered their "reputational ass" in the articles -- for those who opened them.
But we didn't cancel until after the election. And kept the WaPo.

have i missed anything?
oh! and he is the best at (fill in the blank), nobody knows more than him on (fill in the blank), and whatever the hell other lies fall out of his mouth.
I don't think it will happen because I don't think he can physically/mentally do it. there is a long time between now and then and many lawsuits headed his way, and headed toward his family and his crime circle.
but we came close to a catastrophe and we better make sure that it doesn't happen again.

(2,053 posts)The 1000 year Reich was ended by foreign intervention. Not by internal forces. Iran has a pretty dictatorship. Saudi Arabia has a pretty good dictatorship. Russia has a pretty good dictatorship. Turkey has a pretty good dictatorship. Lots of dictatorships seem to doing well in Africa. Democrats have shown themselves to be very inadequate holds against authoritarian power grabs. Strongly worded tweets and belief in the system prevailing have been pretty pathetic at stopping the repuke power grabs

(28,493 posts)a reasonably representative democracy before the current dictators took power.
Plus, Germany and Hitler brought about its own downfall by declaring war on everyone.
I actually have a lot more faith in this country's survival than most people, apparently. Plus, I'm old enough to recall that since practically forever, definitely starting with FDR, people have been predicting the imminent downfall of this democracy almost constantly.

(11,767 posts)Iran, Saudi Arabia, and even Russia are regional powers at best. Russia is only still relevant because they possess the nuclear weapons of the Soviet Union. If not for that, they would barely be able to hold their own Federation together. Those powers are able to move about because they do not present an imminent threat to the world at this time. A fascist United States, with our ability to project our strength basically anywhere in the world in a matter of hours, would be a threat to the peace of the entire world. A fascist United States would be expansionist, with the actual ability to expand by force.
There would be war in a matter of a decade, both internal and external.

(58,785 posts)also really should take a look at the people of those countries, their wannabe counterparts. But won't, of course.
Dictators must be feared by "my people." And those dictated to must be too both too afraid and too oppressed to cause trouble, such as by daring to object to anything.
North Korea's once again suffering from famine, with mass death from starvation and exposure to cold this winter already beginning.

(17,821 posts)If Democrats don't go to the polls like they did in 2020, it's going to be ugly. I fully expect them to use every underhanded trick they can think of to win that election. There's going to be intimidation at the polls and lots of challenges to the results in places where they don't win. If we win, I expect them to come out of the woodwork and try to take over any way they can. If they win, we'll be on our way to dictatorship. It's going to be bad either way.

(17,821 posts)He's usually good about not watching it while I'm there, but yesterday it was on when I got there. It was ridiculous, the things they were saying.
The Virginia election is a sign of things to come, but they need to do a recount in NJ. I asked him why the Republican in NJ wasn't conceding. He was short about as many votes as the Democrat in VA was. He said, "well, I think he just wants to wait until all the votes are counted. There are still some out there." I said not enough to make a difference in the outcome.
I said that I hope this is not going to be a regular thing now, for Republicans to whine that the Democrats cheated every time the Republican loses. So not long after that, he turned the news off.

(10,484 posts)Until wealthy Ds are willing to put at least twice the amount of resources as Rs put into dishonest propaganda behind a massive counter-campaign compellingly telling the truths that disprove RW lies, Rs will will continue to profit financially & benefit politically from their long-standing, multi-media blitzkrieg of BS.
But, few powerful Ds seem to understand (or care) that this is one of the most important fronts in this epic battle.
Yet, now that so many R-controlled state legislatures have siezed the power to legally steal every election from now on, I can't help feeling it may already be too late to save our country from a swift and complete fascist takeover.

I know I repeat myself, in asking, but I must inquire--what do they think most Americans are going to do affter Rs simply declare R candidates the winners in every election from now on and then begin to impose brutal subjugation on those not loyal to Dear Leader?

(10,484 posts)dream come true for an increasing number of Rs. It may not even be necessary to bring in foreign troops.
Their party is now made up largely of a Trump cult who enjoy being violent & cruel and are proud of it. They see themselves as justified crusaders for a glorious cause. History shows us how far such people will go.
I suspect their Dear Leader will become increasingly vocal and public with his orders for them to increase such behaviors.
He & other elected officials loyal to him have already led a coup attempt for which It's looking quite clear neither he nor they will suffer any consequences. How can we fail to see what this portends?
Presumably Rs will continue to enact more legalized election theft for themselves. Bcause so many Americans aren't informed enough to see that as a quiet coup, there won't be enough resistance to stop or reverse the power grab.
Those who do resist will be be subject to increasingly brutal police & military suppression. Much of the media will justify & support the strong arm tactics, so most Americans won't object.
By 2024, after the states with majority R legislatures hand TFG the presidency, the violent suppression of resistance will ramp up along with the brutal persecution of "undesirables."
Even as I don't truly believe this scenario will come about, I can't find a realistic, logical argument that it won't.
Maybe the fact that the past 20 months of my life have been the worst of my life--truly tragic in multiple ways--clouds my judgement, but I don't think that explains away the looming dystopia I fear.

(10,484 posts)how our system of government is legally structured and don't fucking care. Their hero they elected & insist is still rightfully POTUS knows virtually nothing about the US Constitution & cares even less.
They define America by it's worst aspects & actions and swear to violently protect & defend the most dishonest & dishonorable of them.
We were too quick to forgive & forget the last bloody rebellion and it's had a lot to do with what's wrong with US now.

People are locked up when a jury of one's peers decides that someone committed a crime. This goes back to the Magna Carta at least...
I hate the concept that the Government is this all powerful omnipresent power like the Stasi or Gestapo that can "lock you up".
Other than that, you're dead-on and I can't disagree.
