A Montana National Guard soldier became the first woman to finish the Armys sniper course at Fort Benning, Georgia, military officials said.
The woman, who was not identified in a news release from the Army on Monday, completed the seven-week class Friday.
The military describes the course as a program to turn students into the most feared weapon on the battlefield.
The soldier, who enlisted in the National Guard in December, was sent to Fort Benning for basic and advanced individual training. Training staff members and others recommended that she take the sniper course because of her superior performance, the Army said.
We are extremely proud of this soldiers achievement and recognize that this is a milestone for not only Montana, but the entire National Guard and Army, Maj. Gen. J. Peter Hronek, the adjutant general for Montana, said in a statement.

(9,888 posts)if I, as a woman, do not find this to be a milestone in a direction I like to see women going. I find it sad, really. But then, I also hate all these military milestones for women.
And, as a mental health professional, the very notion of someone, anyone, becoming a sniper makes me a little sick for them.

(9,966 posts)in my son's platoon in boot camp who could have done this. She was in the Army Olympic Development program. She was a biathlete (skiing and shooting). The first day they had rifle training, she walked in, picked up her rifle, sighted it, and promptly shot a smiley face into the target. The rifle instructor was not amused, but everyone else was and gave her a big "HOOAH!" She ended up leading everybody in riflery and basically being a secondary instructor.
Her name is Kristina Sebasteanski, and she now runs an adaptive winter sports program in Maine which has helped a lot of veterans. She's a great person.
